Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Begins Sunday: Latest Updates

Israeli officials are preparing to welcome back dozens of people who have been held captive by Hamas for more than a year in Gaza, not knowing whether they will return hungry, distraught or dead.

Thirty-three hostages are to be freed in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, the first such release since the seven-week ceasefire. Some families caught glimpses of their loved ones in videos captured by Hamas. But it is not clear in what condition the slaves will return.

In Israeli hospitals, health officials have been preparing remote areas where the hostages can begin their recovery in secret. The Ministry of Health in Israel developed many ways to help them mentally and physically. There are concerns that she may be suffering from infertility.

“Those who were released at that time were already fed,” said Mr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Ministry of Health in Israel, about those who were released during the peace of 2023. “Just imagine their situation now, after another 400 days. We are very worried about this. “

After Hamas led the Oct. 7, 2023 in Israel, killing about 1,200 people and capturing about 250 others, about 105 Israeli and foreign slaves were freed in a sabbatical in November of that year. A few were later released from Israeli forces, and the Israeli army took the bodies of many others.

But at least 98 hostages remained in Gaza, many of whom are presumed dead by Israeli authorities.

Among the women, elderly men and other hostages who have returned under the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, many are believed to have been held in the streets of the terrorist group in Gaza, which can leave physical and psychological scars.

Health officials have been looking for any intelligence – including video surveillance – to determine the condition of the hostages, said Dr. Mizrahi. A committee of government officials including Dr. Mizrahi confirmed that some were killed.

Israeli officials say the release will be very similar to the previous ceasefire, in which 105 hostages were released instead of 240 Palestinians held in Israeli custody.

During this exchange, Hamas fighters handed over hostages – mostly women and children – to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Red Cross workers transported the prisoners from Gaza in a well-known ambulance to Egypt before taking them to Israel.

At the border crossing, Israeli intelligence officers confirmed their identity. At the same time, Israeli security officials released a group of Palestinian women and youth prisoners.

Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have set up three reception centers to receive hostages along the Gaza border, according to an Israeli army chief. These will work with the Israeli army, as well as doctors and psychologists, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

From there, the hostages will be taken to Israeli hospitals that have been preparing to treat them, the official said.

The 105 hostages who were released in November 2023 returned home after nearly 50 days in captivity in Gaza. They arrived in a world that had changed a lot; others only heard about their friends and loved ones who were killed in the Hamas-led attack.

At first, the authorities wanted to unite the people who were returning home as soon as possible, according to Dr. Mizrahi. Now, health officials recommend that released hostages stay in the hospital for at least four days, if not longer, he said.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the hostages – some of whom survived the captivity – just wait.

“Last time, we saw the Red Cross moving the hostages, and some of them were running to relatives, hugging them,” said Einat Yehene, a psychologist who works with the Hostage Families Forum, a support group. “It will not be easy and the same this time, because of the physical condition and the feeling we are expecting.”
