Residents of the West of the United States jumped on a heat wave on Saturday that hospitalized some people, with temperatures planned to reach dangerous levels throughout the weekend in Washington, Oregon, South California, Nevada and Arizona.

About 1.2 million people presented an extreme heat risk, which means that temperatures had to remain dangerously high without night relief. The largest area under the warning has been around Tucson, Arizona, where the National Weather Service provides vertices between 102 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit (39 and 42 degrees Celsius). The regions of inner California have also faced extreme risks.

Additional 18.6 million were under a major heat risk, affecting workers and anyone without cooling and regular hydration, including Miami.

Portland, Oregon, reported a record for August 22, according to preliminary data: 102 degrees (38.9 Celsius). If it is maintained, it would break the top of 98 degrees (36.7 degrees Celsius) for the date, fixed in 1942, according to the NWS.

Long -distance runners fought by the stifling heat in an annual hood relay race at the Portland coast, which goes from Inland Mt. Hood to the Pacific Ocean. At least one runner in competition as part of a group of athletes over 50 has lost consciousness after traveling 4 miles (6.4 kilometers).

David Loftus said that he does not remember having collapsed, but his companions told him that it had happened shortly after spending the stick. “Another foreigner saw me wavering and caught me before touching the ground,” said Loftus.

When he regained consciousness, he saw an ambulance there to come and get him. Loftus, a Portland writer and actor, said on Saturday that he had hydrated and died with water before his race, but that was not enough. He was held for observation overnight in a hospital but recovered.

Above when Loftus took the stick, an emergency notice of extreme heat was displayed for Portland and the surrounding county. Emergency visits and 911 calls were increasing.

“As a general rule, we see only one visit or not of visits. Yesterday, we had 16 visits, including six of Hood to Coast particulations,” said Brendon Haggerty of the County Department of Multnomah by email. “The Metropolitan Region of Portland is faced with the highest heat risk of 2025.”

In June 2021, the city recorded a summit of 116 (46 Celsius) during a heat wave which left more than 100 deaths. Most of the victims lived alone and the vast majority were 60 years or over, but the youngest was 37 years old, said officials at the time.
