The first two Avatar The films have brought in more than $ 5 billion combined. It is an amazing number that Disney surely thinks that will be added to December 19, when the third film, Avatar: fire and ashknocks on theaters. Director James Cameron thinks it too, but he is still not 100% sure if it will be enough for him to continue the franchise.

In the current state of things, Avatar 4 should be released four years after this film on December 21, 2029, with the fifth and last film two years later, on December 19, 2031. But, in a new interview, Cameron explains why there is a slight chance that these films could not occur, and why the gap between them will be beneficial.

“The big swing in all of this is, let us make money with Avatar 3? “Cameron has said in an interview with Variety.” I mean, we will do money. But the question is what type of beneficiary margin, if necessary, and how many incentives does this continue in this universe? Or perhaps we expect a certain time until we discover how to reduce costs. Because production costs have been rooted in recent years VFX.

“So there is an argument to take a break and understand that,” he continued. “There is an argument to release and make a smaller and more personal film while waiting, while this is understood. There is an argument, in a wild success, for us, we launch and go right away (Avatar 4 and 5) And I find a production methodology where I have a little break where I can make another film. And there is another argument that simply says making these two fucking films and understanding everything else when I am 80 years old. “”

There is also an element of history here. In the same interview, Cameron explains that Fire and ash will bring a little closer to his Avatar History, while the fourth and fifth films will largely tell a new story. “Two and three really tell a big story,” he said. “And then finally, if I am so lucky and I make four and five, four and five tell a big story. So it stops for a beat after the end of three. I don’t want to say that we will necessarily stop in production, but the story stops, then it jumps a little in time.”

Part of this, of course, is that Cameron is just careful. He doesn’t want to count his chickens before hatching. He knows that it is not a guarantee that Avatar: fire and ash Large $ 1 billion, not to mention $ 2 billion like the first two films. And yet he is James Cameron. If a filmmaker won this expectation, it’s him. This is why Disney has already been released with these films, and although we bet almost everything we will see. He just doesn’t want to seem too confident. But it can almost certainly be.
