Jeffrey Katzenberg – Film producer, former DreamWorks CEO, and founding partner of the WNDRCO technological investment company – is perhaps the most important, a father and a grandfather.

This role prompted it to support Aura, a startup developing tools focused on AI which go far beyond standard parental controls, in 2021. The aura platform follows behavioral models such as sleep and concentration, mental health risks, in particular self-harassment or suicidal ideation, and offer parents visibility on children’s social media. The tools fueled by AI, which analyze language models, online tone, emotional expression and late evening activity, have been developed in consultation with pediatric health and mental health experts, including collaboration with the Boston children’s hospital.

Speaking alongside the CEO of Aura, Hari Ravichandran, Fortune Brainstorm Tech in Park City, Utah on Monday, Katzenberg, who sits on the Aura board of directors, argued that parents cannot wait for the legislators to catch up. “The idea that we will see aggressive legislation (to combat online damage) in this country is unlikely,” he said. He compared the situation to security belts: their value was obvious at the start, he explained, but he still took 80 years in the laws to impose them. “These things do not happen quickly, unfortunately.”

Meanwhile, the dangers for children and families go up. Katzenberg cited an investigation will have 2,500 teenagers aged 13 to 18, which revealed that almost half said they felt depressed and a third said they are fighting with social withdrawal.

Just as adolescent drivers spend years preparing for the risks of the road – with the learner’s permits and driver’s EDs – children should also be prepared for smartphones, social media and AI, Katzenberg said. “Most children really want advice, they want help along the way, (however) they do not want to be spied on,” he said. “Aura is observational – this gives you as a parent around data and information … This is mainly what their digital health looks like.”
