Together, the two companies hold more than 23% of local television channels affiliated with the national programming of ABC. Disney’s decision to temporarily withdraw the show, under pressure from the president of the Federal Commission Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, sparked a storm of fire and fueled a national debate on freedom of expression.

Politicians, defenders of freedom of expression and Hollywood stars came to the defense of Kimmel in the days that followed. And a call to boycott Disney, including the cancellation of Disney +subscriptions, has also become viral online, struck Disney stock, which prompted the house of the mouse on Monday to announce the return of the program.

However, the same day, Sinclair posted on X that he would preempt the show while discussions with ABC would continue.

Nexstar, for his part, said in a press release on Tuesday that he held his decision to withdraw the show, quoting “bad insensitive and insensitive” comments from Kimmel.

A chronology of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! controversial

The controversy began after Kirk’s shooting on Wednesday, September 10. In the days that followed, when little was known on the shooter, many politicians and conservative experts suggested that he was motivated by the leftist ideology.

On the night of Monday, September 15, Kimmel rejected these statements.

“We have struck new stockings during the weekend with the gang Maga trying desperately to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as something other than one of them, and do everything they can to score political points,” said Kimmel.

Two days later, on September 17, the FCC commissioner, Brendan Carr, told the conservative commentator Benny Johnson: “We can do it the simplest or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change their driving and act, frankly, on Kimmel, or there will be additional work for future FCC.”

The FCC regulates the television broadcast and has the power to suspend the license of a station.

A few hours after Carr’s remarks, Nexstar – who is trying to acquire Tegna, another owner of television stations – and Sinclair announced that they would preempt the program. ABC shortly afterwards and announced that it was suspending the program.

At the time, Sinclair said that the suspension was not sufficient and called for additional ABC and FCC action.
