Lee Jae Myung in South Korea lights the charm at Trump’s meeting

Seoul correspondent
A few hours before the South Korean president Lee Jae Myung met US President Donald Trump, a social position of truth.
“What’s going on in South Korea?” Trump wrote, pointing towards a “purge or revolution” – which many considered a reference to the pursuit of former president Yoon Suk Yeol for his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law last December.
But Lee turned on the charm and avoided a rehearsal of what happened at the Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine or Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa.
But the meeting was dominated by Trump’s constant references to North Korea and despite the flattery of Lee, did not give up much to the attenuation of commercial and defense problems. Here are three main dishes to remember.
Lee’s flattery strategy worked
Lee’s team had been nervous about this meeting, and they had good reasons to be: Trump historically wary of South Korea, although it is an American ally. In the past, he accused it of Freeloading from tens of thousands of American troops which are stationed on the peninsula helping to defend itself against North Korea. He also criticized Seoul’s defense expenses and his trade surplus with the United States.
Lee, a leftist politician, has a reputation in Washington who plays the worst of Trump’s fears. He was skeptical of the American alliance and said that he wanted to develop stronger ties with China. He was also painted by American conservative commentators as “anti-Americans”.
Lee’s team feared that he was subjected to an oval office and should defend himself against the theories of the right -wing conspiracy.
The social post of truth in the hours preceding the meeting would have scared them. Trump’s disturbing message seemed to refer to the consequences of the crisis of the Martial Law of South Korea last December, and the efforts that Mr. Lee and the prosecutors make to investigate the ousted president Yoon Suk Yeol, his wife and his former members of his government.
It is something far right in South Korea, and even some in the United States, have been slowed down.
It was the nightmarish scenario for South Korean officials – that Lee could be forced to defend himself against the theories of the right -wing conspiracy. But when the meeting arrived, Trump raised the problem, to brush it quickly as a likely misunderstanding.
But Lee’s flattery strategy clearly worked. He first amazed by the new “Bright and Beautiful” look from the oval office, then praised the personal relationship that the American president built with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“The only person who can make progress is your president,” said Lee. “If you become the peacemaker, then I will help you by being a cardiac stimulator.”
Lee even joked on the construction of a Trump tower in North Korea and play golf.

If it seems a little managed, it was South Korea’s strategy for this raised challenge meeting, which aimed to cover trade, the role of American troops in South Korea and how Seoul spends for its defense.
Lee’s number one objective was to make sure he left the Oval Office on the right side of Trump.
Later, when he was asked by a journalist from his previous comments on the South Korean authorities who plunged the churches, Trump said that he had heard of it through “Intel”, but that “did not feel me like South Korea”.
The “rumor” was probably a “misunderstanding,” said Trump. When Lee said the authorities were investigating the complaint, Trump said he was sure they were “trying”.
It seemed that Lee had avoided a moment Zelensky at the White House – and his team can push a sigh of relief.

Kim Jong a lot
It might seem strange to see President Trump sitting next to the South Korean leader, during their very first meeting, speaking of the way he managed well with Kim Jong Un, the South Juror Enemy, and how eager he is looking to see him again.
But it is in fact one of the few areas of the common ground that these two leaders have.
The relatively new president of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, adopts a new approach to North Korea than that of his predecessor, accused of having annoyed Kim Jong Un.
It was, in fact, Lee who started the conversation on Kim Jong Un, praising President Trump for the personal relations he built with the North Korean chief and asking him to act as a “peacemaker” in the Korean peninsula.
Lee wants to speak to Kim, establish peaceful relations between the North and the South, but he knows that Trump has much better chance of doing this.
Trump, who met Kim three times during his first mandate, often revealed the dictator. Trump said the pair “fell in love” during the exchange of letters.
“I spent a lot of free time with him, talking about things we are probably not supposed to talk about,” Trump said on Monday. “I get along very well with him.”
“I can’t wait to meet Kim Jong one in the appropriate future,” added Trump.
The question is whether Kim Jong one will want to talk to one or the other.
North Korea has repeatedly rejected Lee’s attempts to speak and ignored the United States attempts to restart dialogue. He did not close the door to speak to Trump, but suggested that it should be very different from the one before – on the basis that North Korea would not abandon its nuclear weapons.
This is now something that Seoul and Washington should try to sail.
Trade, unresolved defense problems
At the top of the agenda of the visit of the Lee White House, there was trade and defense. But no concrete agreement was made for either.
Seoul had managed to negotiate American prices on South Korean goods at 15%, after Trump threatened rates up to 25%. This came after Seoul agreed to invest $ 350 billion (264.1 billion pounds Sterling) in the United States-of which $ 150 billion will help help the United States build ships.
South Korea has a flourishing shipping industry, building more ships than any other country in the world other than China, at a time when American naval construction and its navy are declining.
And just a few hours after Lee’s White House meeting, Korean Air announced that it would buy 103 Boeing Boeing.
But prices on South Korean products will not be lowered anytime soon. “I think we made an agreement” on trade, told Trump to journalists after the meeting, without providing more details. “They had some problems with it, but we got to our arms.”
The meeting did not do little either to ensure that other problems of bilateral links.
Trump has circumvented a question on the withdrawal of American Troops from South Korea on Monday – an idea with which the White House would have played with Trump accused several times from South Korea to take advantage of American protection and not pay enough for the defense.
Also on Monday, Trump launched the idea of letting the United States own the ground of land of Osan, south of Seoul, jointly operated by the United States and South Korea.
But a certain assurance that Lee obtained from Trump, at least, was the economic alliance between their country. The United States and South Korea “need each other” for trade, Trump told journalists in the presence of Lee.
“We love what they do, we love their product, we love their ships, we love a lot of things they do,” he said. Meanwhile, South Korea needs oil and gas, and the United States would exchange those with them, he added.
