Liverpool need Nunez brace in injury time to down Brentford | Football News

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez scored twice in injury time at Brentford as the Reds extended their lead to seven points.

Darwin Nunez scored twice during stoppage time Liverpool beat Brentford 2-0 to strengthen his place in first place in the Premier League on Saturday.

Second-placed Arsenal will look to restore the four-point gap on Liverpool by defeating Aston Villa in the next round.

Nunez was jeered by the Brentford fans when he was substituted in the 65th minute, but the Uruguayan striker responded by turning the ball over from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the first minute of added time.

Nunez then scored two minutes later to secure a first win in three league games for Liverpool, who faced Manchester United and Nottingham Forest in both sides that defeated Tottenham in the first leg of the English League Cup semifinals.

Liverpool have yet to lose one league game all season, at home to Forest in September. The Reds had 37 shots against Brentford and scored with their last two.

Justin Kluivert scored his second hat-trick in the league to inspire Bournemouth 4-1 at Newcastle, whose nine-game winning streak came to an abrupt end.

The Dutchman struck in the sixth, 44th and second half at St James’ Park. Milos Kerkez added the fourth goal in the sixth minute of added time. Bruno Guimaraes equalized for fourth-placed Newcastle.

Kluivert, whose father is former Netherlands international Patrick Kluivert, also scored three goals against Wolverhampton in November. In this game, all of Kluivert’s goals were penalties, but he scored from open play every time against Newcastle.

Six of Newcastle’s nine consecutive wins have come in the league, helping to lift the Saudi-dominated side into the top four in their bid to return to the Champions League.

Newcastle midfielder Alexander Isak has failed to score, having scored in eight consecutive games. That left him three games short of Leicester striker Jamie Vardy’s record for the longest scoring streak in Premier League history.

Bournemouth dominated Newcastle despite being hampered by a long list of injuries. The south coast side extended their unbeaten run to 11 games and moved up to sixth place, tied on points with fifth-placed Chelsea. A fifth-place finish could earn them a place in next season’s Champions League for the first time. “Why don’t you dream big?” Kluivert responded. “We don’t know where we can end up.”

Next-to-last Leicester lost seven games in a row in the league, 2-0 to Fulham, to increase the pressure on recently hired manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy has won just one of his nine league games – the first against West Ham on December 3. Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traore scored for Fulham.

Crystal Palace beat West Ham 2-0 thanks to two second-half goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, the second from the penalty spot.
