Authorities through Egypt are looking for a 3000 -year -old bracelet that has been missing in a leading museum in Cairo.

The rare band of gold, adorned with pearls of Lapis Lazuli Spherical, dates back to the reign of the King Amenmope, a pharaoh of the 21st dynasty of ancient Egypt which reigned from 993 to 984bc.

The Ministry of Antiquities said it had taken immediate measures after the bracelet disappeared from the Egyptian museum restoration laboratory and the case had been returned to the police.

An image of the bracelet was distributed at all Egyptian airports, sea ports and land border passages as “a precautionary stage to prevent smuggling attempts,” added the ministry.

A specialized committee was also trained to make an inventory and an examination of all the artifacts kept in the catering laboratory.

The ministry said that he had deliberately delayed the announcement of the disappearance of the bracelet “to ensure an appropriate environment for the progression of surveys”, but he did not mention when the jewel was seen for the last time.

The Egyptian newspaper, Al-Misri al-Yawm, reported that the disappearance had been detected in recent days when the museum staff prepared to ship dozens of artifacts in Rome for an exhibition which should open its doors next month.

The Egyptian Museum of Cairo is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East. It houses more than 170,000 artefacts, including the funeral mask in a gilded wood of Amenemope.

The disappearance of the bracelet occurs six weeks before the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Voisine Giza, where the world renowned treasures of the tomb of King Tutankhamun have been transferred and will be exposed.
