Lyle Menendez received the same recommendation as his brother Erik when he was denied parole on Friday after serving decades in prison for the murder of their parents in 1989.

A panel of two commissioners rejected Menendez’s conditional release for three years, after which he will be eligible again, in a case that continues to fascinate the public.

The brothers were sentenced to life prison in 1996 for having fatally killed their father, Jose Menendez, and his mother, Kitty Menendez, in their manor by Beverly Hills almost 36 years ago on August 20, 1989.

While the defense lawyers argued that the brothers had acted by self -defense after years of sexual abuse by their father, the prosecutors said that the brothers had asked for a heritage of several million dollars.

A judge reduced his sentences in May and they immediately became eligible for parole. Conditional liberation hearings have marked the closest that they gained freedom since their convictions almost 30 years ago.

Erik Menendez, who is detained in the same prison in San Diego, was denied parole on Thursday after the commissioners determined that his bad behavior in prison made him a risk to public security.

A day later, Lyle Menendez told the details of the conditional liberation committee on the abuse he suffered under his parents. He cried, faced Roux, while delivering his closing declaration.

He still seemed to want to protect his “little brother”, telling the commissioners that he had taken unique responsibility for the murders.

“I can never compensate for the evil and the sorrow that I have caused everyone in my family,” he said. “I’m really sorry for everyone, and I will always be sorry.”

The State Corrections Department chose a single journalist to watch the video conference and share the details with the rest of the press.
