Enzo Maresca has confirmed that strengthening defense is his top priority after the recent LCA surgery in Levi Colwill.

The young defender, who played an important role for Chelsea last season and during the club World Cup, faces a long recovery and should miss most of the next campaign after suffering the injury during training earlier this week.

Although Chelsea has already invested more than 200 million pounds sterling in new signatures this summer, Maresca said that the club is likely to return to the transfer market to strengthen its defensive options in the absence of Colwill.

“It’s a priority for me,” Maresca told Channel 5.

“Levi is a fantastic player. What we achieved last season is because of him. He played a lot of games with me, I love him. We will miss we.

“We also try to find different solutions.”

Maresca made these comments after the first friendly match of the Chelsea pre-season at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues won a comfortable 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen, despite the withdrawal of training only four days before.

By thinking about performance, Maresca said: “(I am) very satisfied with performance, especially after only four days of training. It is good to start again.”

One of the most remarkable players was the young Brazilian Estevao, who scored alongside Joao Pedro and impressed his debut, exercising a complaint for a regular place when the Premier League season begins.

“He is very young, very, very young. He must adapt, he must play. I said yesterday that he was going to help because he is a fantastic player,” added Maresca about promising talent.

With Chelsea considerably strengthening their attacks this summer, Maresca has recognized that not all players will be satisfied with playing time, given the competition for places.

“Not all will be happy, because if they do not play, they are not happy.

“They must understand that they are all good, 22, 23, 24 players, and they must understand that there will be many rotations.”
