Arsenal’s replacement, Gabriel Martinelli, scored 36 seconds after leaving the bench, then made a second when the Gunners started their Champions League campaign with a great victory in Bilbao.

The Brazilian winger replaced Ebelechi Eze in the 71st minute and had an instant and revealing impact, flowing on the film by Leandro Trossard and beating Unai Simon.

Martinelli then climbed in front of a defender on the left to reduce the ball to his compatriot Subrossard, and his deviated shot entered the post to seal the victory with three minutes to do.

The match had been launched for a large part of the match, because the first meeting of the teams failed to set fire.

But the Gunners, reinforced by their summer signatures and their stronger team, launched themselves to take the three points.

Athletic Club, in the Champions League for the first time since 2014-15, appointed an XI who had never played in the competition. And the experience turned out to end at the end.

The new Arsenal striker, Viktor Gyokerres, had a busy but frustrating night and was replaced by Trossard after 65 minutes with Mikel Arteta playing Mikel Merino in the middle.

And the new men on the bench quickly had a say to give to the Gunners, who reached the semi-finals last season, an invaluable victory outside.
