Everton’s boss David Moyes described the late penalty that gave Leeds the victory to Elland Road “a truly mediocre decision”.

The skipper of Toffees, James Tarkowski, blocked a shot from Anton Stach with his arm – which was by his side – and after a referee Var Check, Chris Kavanagh, to grant a penalty was confirmed.

Lukas Nmecha buried the kick to ensure three points for Leeds and Cap a lamentable display of Everton.

Moyes told the BBC: “I’m really disappointed and unless you cut the boy’s hand, I don’t know where he’s going. I don’t know if the crowd plays a role there. They approached their team and Leeds played well and probably deserved victory in all justice.

“I think it’s a really poor decision. Var had the chance to undo it. They tried to say that he leaned over the ball. Are you surely allowed to look with your hands by your side?

“I think it’s really bad for us. The referees did not have a great weekend.

“Leeds came out in the blocks and we expected. We changed at halftime and we were much better in the second half and if a team was going to win it, I thought it would be us.”

Tarkowski said he was convinced that the decision on the ground would be canceled, but the former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville – and Jamie Carragher – were categorical, it was a correct decision.

“James Tarkowski is the type of defender who thinks he should put himself in front of each blow,” said Neville.

“Guilt has been written everywhere on Tarkowski’s face. He knows it is a penalty.

“Tarkowski moved his arm to the ball. He leans there and blocks it. It is a penalty, and he knows what he did. He knows it is a penalty.

“He knows he made a mistake.”
