Real Madrid published a statement opposing a proposal for the Barcelona Laliga match against Villarreal to play outside of Spain.

The club said that the plan – advanced without prior consultation with other teams – breaks the fundamental structure of the main Spanish division, in which each team plays a house and an outside match against each opponent.

Madrid claims that moving the match abroad would give clubs an “excessive sporting advantage” and would undermine the integrity of the competition.

“This decision … modifies the competitive balance and grants an excessive sporting advantage to the candidates’ clubs,” said the press release.

“The unilateral modification of this regime violates equality between contenders, compromises the legitimacy of the results and establishes an unacceptable precedent.”

The Spanish champions insist that all the matches must be played under the same conditions for each team, warning that such a decision “would mark a turning point for the world of football” if it was authorized to move forward.

This is not the first time that the Liga has explored competitive games abroad. In 2018, a plan to stage a Girona match against Barcelona in Miami collapsed after the opposition of players, clubs and guiding bodies.

FIFA and UEFA have since argued that the matches of the national league should stay in the country of origin, except in rare and justified circumstances.

The last proposal again sparked a debate, criticism arguing that such arrangements favor commercial gains on sports equity.

The supporters of the decision indicate that it could extend the global scope of Laliga and the commercial value, after similar experiences in the NFL and the NBA.

Real Madrid confirmed that they had already taken measures on three fronts:

  • Fifa – Ask the world director of the world not to approve the match without unanimous agreement of all the Liga clubs.
  • Uefa – Undering the body director of European football to put pressure on the Spanish FA (RFEF) to block the demand, reaffirming the 2018 previous.
  • Higher Sports Council – Ask that no administrative approval is given unless all clubs consent.

The press release ends with the club reaffirming its “commitment to respect the national and international rules which guarantee equity” and promising to defend them “before all the competent bodies”.

If it is approved, the Barcelona VS Villarreal match would mark the first competitive match of Laliga to play abroad, a decision likely to face more ferocious challenges in the coming weeks.
