The Rangers manager Russell Martin insists that his team “needed fans” after the Scottish club was beaten 3-1 at the forefront of their draw of the Champions League eliminators with the Brugge club in Ibrox.

The side of Martin endured a horror in the first half and followed his Belgian opposition 3-0 after only 20 minutes thanks to the goals of Romeo Vermant, Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele.

This caused noisy huts of the crowd at home, but the hosts gave themselves a life buoy in the second half when Danilo withdrew one to take a deficit of two goals in Belgium next week.

While Martin recognized the performance below in the first 45, the boss of the Rangers remained focused on the positive points.

“It is so difficult that it will never be for players on the field. I am proud of the way they answered,” Martin told Amazon Prime.

“I am really proud of the second half, the game is not finished, the link is not finished.

“The energy was completely different in the second half and I am really proud of them for that because it was not easy. It is the most difficult many of these players.

“You cannot impact the key line. You put a game plan in place to try to win the game, but decision -making changes because we are so anxious.

“We were far too open, it was not the game plan. In the second half, we did not change much, but we were much more competitive and we had a threat. The players ran very hard for each other and I am proud of them for that.”

In response to the supporters, Martin accepted that they had the right to express their feelings but urged them to put themselves behind the team before next Wednesday.

The director of the Rangers said: “Fans are all entitled to their opinion, but we will need it so much.

“This club had a long time, a season, when it was not as successful as it wants, so we have to come together.

“The team will need fans. The precursor to change is pain. I knew that coming here, there would be pain at first, we must make sure that the pain was worth it.

“We will grow together through it, but we have to grow up together as a club. We must give supporters more moments as we have done in the second half. Fans are the most important people in the club.

“We want to qualify for the Champions League and we will do everything we can next week.”
