Fighting

• Russia said it had opened an investigation into the “massacre” of seven civilians in the western Russian village of Russkoe Porechnoye, which Ukraine has seized since last August. The bodies were found by Russian soldiers inside the basement of the apartment building.
• The head of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskii, said his army was suffering from a lack of weapons. He added that the military force is “not enough” to meet the needs of the military, and the gaps are being filled “within reasonable limits” by sending people with other expertise.
• The Ukrainian General Staff accused the Russian military of using weapons containing banned substances 434 times in Ukraine in December 2024, bringing the total number of such cases to 5,389 since February 2023.
• Ukraine’s military said it had shot down 43 of 61 Russian targets in a nighttime raid targeting nine regions across Ukraine. No major damage or injuries were immediately reported.

• The Interfax news agency reported that Russian forces captured the village of Vozdvyzhenka in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.
• The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russian forces have recently advanced in the Russian region of Kursk, where Ukrainian forces have taken part, and the Ukrainian regions of Kupyansk, Lyman, Chasiv Yar, Torestsk, Kurakhove and Velyka Novosilka. Ukrainian forces have recaptured positions lost in Chasiv Yar and Toretsk, ISW said.
• ISW also reported that Russian volunteer forces continue to strengthen the Russian military by recruiting women to join the armed forces.

Military support

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also asked for “strong support” from Ukraine’s allies and for more US Patriot defense equipment. This follows a week of more than 1,000 Russian indictments.
