Details on NYC Woman Accused of Murdering Construction Manager for Unpaid Rent

The New York Post the landlord allegedly sent a property manager to collect $24,000 in cash from Sandra Coto-Navarro and her husband. Later, the authorities found the body of the boss beaten and wrapped in garbage bags.

According to PEOPLEco-workers of Jose Portillo alerted the police on Tuesday, Jan. 14, around 5pm after failing to return to Navarro’s home. Navarro said he gave Portillo $23,000 earlier that day, and he left soon after. However, police said surveillance footage did not show the building leaving Navarro’s home.

Authorities also reported a strong smell of bleach in the area, as well as maps and bloodstains near the bed and clothing. The New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed that Portillo suffered multiple injuries to the head, a wound to the neck, and cuts behind his knees.

According to the New York Post, Sandra Coto-Navarro was home alone at the time of the murder. Police initially questioned her husband but released him after reviewing evidence to prove that nothing had happened.

Sandra Coto-Navarro was arraigned on Thursday, January 16, for second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of weapons in connection with the death of Jose Portillo. Navarro could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Portillo’s ex-wife told the New York Post that he was a kind and caring man. “He tried to help everyone. He tried to help them and he killed him. It’s bad,” Portillo’s ex-wife said.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz described the case as a “horrific murder” and is working hard to bring justice.

“Now, a life has been lost and a family is in danger because the accused chose to settle a rent dispute with violence. This is not how civilized people act. The accused will face justice for this heinous murder,” District Attorney Katz explained.
