Matthew Broderick is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Ferris Bueller, and rightfully so. When in 1986 Photo by Ferris Bueller Rest Day It’s a coming-of-age story about an underachieving high school computer hacker who uses technology to play hooky and have the best day of his life while evading the Dean of Students, Broderick portrays an archetype in the 1983’s. War Games (streaming on Max), a techno-thriller that still holds up today.

Ferris Before Ferris

War Games, which is now streaming on Max, introduces Broderick’s David Lightman after establishing his artistic foundation. During the opening sequence of the film, it becomes clear that the Missile Wing commanders work for the United States Air Force. he hesitates to fire the gun in both hypothetical and realistic doomsday scenarios. Wary of his men’s doubts, John McKittrick (Dabney Coleman) of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) decides it’s best to make it all happen.

Control over NORAD is transferred to a supercomputer called the War Operation Plan Response (WOPR), a cold-blooded machine that will not hesitate to launch missiles at a moment’s notice. After all, we’re in the midst of a massive arms race between the US and Russia at the end of the Cold War, so this is serious business.

Hooky Woopsie and the Threat of World War III

You might be wondering where the Ferris Bueller connection is, but it happened to me as soon as I streamed War Games on Maxand I promise I won’t fix things.

David Lightman, as Ferris in the 1986 film, likes to hack computers and hack into his school’s database to change his grades, as well as the grades of his crush, Jennifer Mack (Ally Sheedy). Unmistakably, David is inspired to expand his hacking game after learning about a video game company called Protovision because he wants to see if he can find any unreleased games in development. Things go awry when David unwittingly infiltrates WOPR, causing it to play what he thinks is a game called “Global Thermonuclear War.”

As luck would have it, David activates WOPR, and the NORAD crew learns of the breach, suspecting that David is a domestic terrorist. If what’s playing on the WOPR footage is correct, David may have activated the machine to start World War III, and NORAD brings him in for questioning. When War Games while Max starts out as a teenage drama, the stakes are raised dramatically as David tries to clear his name and save the world from nuclear annihilation.

Equal parts fun and funny

War Games it often plays straight as a techno-thriller, but it’s not without humor. Matthew Broderick he treads the line between a lovable goofball who is in over his head and a young technologist who uses his skills to protect his country from an imminent nuclear war. As David MacGyvers his way through the military and industrial sectors, he does so with a laugh as if to let the audience know that it’s very difficult. War Games it can be seen from his description of Max, it is still the most interesting work of fantasy at the time.

By writing this, you can burn War games on Max before you start digging up your VHS Ferris Bueller Day make two shapes on it. Whatever you do, don’t resort to scams, or you may end up with unlock codes that are kept hidden from the public.
