An Indian lawyer launched a shoe to the chief judge of the country Br Gavai after having apparently been angry with the remarks that the judge made on Hinduism.

Rakesh Kishore launched his attack during the legal proceedings on Monday in Delhi in what is considered through India as a serious public insult and a violation of security.

Three lawyers present in the courtroom confirmed to the BBC that a shoe had been launched against the judge, with the one saying that he “had” brushed the chief judge and (another) judge … and fell behind them “.

Mr. Kishore was heard that “India will not tolerate the insult to Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism)” because he was far from the courtroom by security officials. He was then suspended from the practice.

Lawyer Ravi Jha, a lawyer who was in the courtroom during the incident, told the BBC that Mr. Kishore “had thrown his shoe and raised his hand to indicate that he had launched the shoe.”

“After being apprehended by the security of the courtroom, the chief judge told lawyers to continue their arguments and not be distracted,” added Mr. Jha.

Chief judge Gavai remained calm all the time, Anas Tanwir, another lawyer who was in the courtroom, told the BBC.

The chief judge did not publicly comment on the issue. Indian authorities later said that no accusation would be made against Mr. Kishore.

We do not know who notices the anger of the lawyer.

But some media reports suggest that it could be linked to a recent judicial petition rejected by a bench led by the chief judge, when he also made remarks on the Hindu Vishnu god.

Rejecting a plea to rebuild an idol of seven feet of Lord Vishnu in a temple of the state of Madhya Pradesh last month, the chief judge said: “This is a litigation of purely advertising interest … Go ask the divinity itself to do something.”

The comments aroused controversy, some accusing him of making fun of Hindu beliefs. Judge Gavai then took note of the criticism, claiming that he respects “all religions,” reported the Press Trust of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the “totally condemnable” shoe attack, joining a choir of criticism from the whole political spectrum.

Modi met with judge Gavai and said that the attack had angry all the Indians, reports PTI. “There is no room for such reprehensible acts in our society,” said the Prime Minister.

Launching a shoe on someone in public is considered an act of lack of respect and humiliation in India and in many other countries.

Earlier this year, a shoe was launched against President Kenyan William Ruto during a rally.

In 2008, an Iraqi journalist launched a shoe to the American president of the time, George W Bush, to protest the American invasion of Iraq.
