Indian Premier League (IPL) winning captain Shreyas Iyer has broken his silence on his exit from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after the 2024 season. Shreyas Iyer said there was a lack of communication from the franchise regarding his retention, which left him uncertain about his future and the team.
The 30-year-old cricketer has grabbed the attention of the huge IPL 2025 market for his batting skills and leadership skills. He became one of the most expensive signings, with Punjab Kings fetching him Rs 26.75 crore. Iyer was recently appointed as the captain of PBKS for the upcoming IPL 2025 season.

Shreyas Iyer said he was disappointed that there was no communication from the Kolkata Knight Riders regarding his retention. He recalled that they had discussed retaining the win immediately after the win, but there was no “real effort” from KKR in terms of retention.
“Of course, I had a great time winning the tournament at KKR. The next result was amazing; they were lighting up the stadium, and I loved every minute I was there. Obviously, we talked (about the reservation) after the IPL tournament,” said the Indian. Express.
“But for several months, there was no rest and there was no real effort to continue the conversation. I was surprised by what was happening. So, due to the lack of communication, we came to a point where we parted ways. That’s the long and the short of it,” added Iyer.

With no update on his future and only learning about the situation a week before his booking, Shreyas said he decided to enter the IPL 2025 mega market, accepting that whatever happens must be.
“Yes, you are obviously disappointed, because when you don’t have a certain way of communication and if you find out about things a week before the reservation date, then there is something missing there. So, I had to call. Everything that is written must be done,” he added.
