Sony announced Wednesday that it would increase prices of the PlayStation 5 console in the United States by $ 50, citing current economic challenges and the financial tension caused by recent American prices on electronics imported from China. This decision affects all versions of the console and comes into force on August 21, with standard retail PlayStation 5 to $ 549.99, digital edition at $ 499.99 and the PS5 PRO at $ 749.99. The accessories and prices of the game remain unchanged, according to Sony’s press release.

“Similar to many global companies, we continue to sail in a difficult economic environment,” wrote Isabelle Tomatis, vice-president of world marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, in Wednesday pressing. “Consequently, we made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States”

The decision comes as the American government, under President Trump, imposed new prices on products from the main manufacturing countries, including China, Japan and Vietnam. Current rate rates have reached their highest levels in decades, which increases consumer prices through basic products, electronics and game equipment being particularly affected. The LAB budget data of the University of Yale show that overall consumer prices increase by 1.8% in the short term due to prices, and analysts warn that equipment manufacturers have repercussions these additional costs to consumers. And while Trump initially insisted that American companies “eat” the costs related to prices, Amazon and Walmart have already started to increase prices on their products, like many others. The way all this will affect inflation in the coming months is always a mystery.

The prices have struck the world of games

Sony is not alone in his response to prices. Microsoft increased the American prices of its XBox Series X and S consoles earlier this year, and Nintendo has promulgated increases in accessory and multiple console price at the beginning of the month, including its original switch and new Switch 2 consoles. These adjustments highlight a broader trend in the game industry, manufacturers citing higher production costs and the economic pressure of prices that threaten beneficiary and growth margins.

Sony also noted that price increases are not confined to the United States, the latter adjustment follows similar increases in other countries earlier in 2025, such as the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and the Latin American markets, where PlayStation console and games and subscription prices increased between 8% and 21%. Sony leaders have attributed these changes to global inflation and the fluctuation of exchange rates, as well as to trade tensions whose impact is felt in the world.

The last increase in prices indicates what will happen for American consumers, who are likely to meet more and more higher costs for electronic and entertainment products while world trade continues to change.
