Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede cricket ground celebrated its golden jubilee in grand style on Sunday (January 19) night with a spectacular show that included music, dance, and a spectacular laser show, and it was an unforgettable evening for those in attendance.
The impressive 50 years of the Wankhede Stadium were celebrated by 60 international cricketers from Mumbai, both men and women, as legendary legends joined the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to celebrate the occasion on Sunday (January 19) in style.
Highlights of the Wankhede Stadium’s golden jubilee included the unveiling of a commemorative stamp and the felicitation of Indian cricket captains from Mumbai—Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, and Diana Edulji.

Apart from these occasions and traditional festivals that reflect Marathi culture, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar’s dance performance was one of the biggest events in Mumbai. Gavaskar entertained the crowd by dancing to Shah Rukh Khan’s Bollywood song “Om Shanti Om” after the anchor asked him to join in.
Even Diana Edulji joined in with India’s legendary batsman, as the pair lit the fire with their stride. Sunil Gavaskar was enthralled by the song “Om Shanti Om”, and showed off his singing skills by singing the song at the request of the anchor. Sachin Tendulkar was also singing the song “Om Shanti Om” in a viral video shared by MCA.

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar said the Wankhede stadium is very special to his heart as the batsman revealed how it was “love at first sight”. Gavaskar said on the occasion as reported by the Times of India: “When the Wankhede Stadium was built in 1974, our dressing room was on the ground floor. When we got down to try it out for the first time, it was love at first sight.”
The former Indian captain added, “Before that, we were playing at the Brabourne Stadium, which belonged to the club (Cricket Club of India). But coming here, it feels like a Mumbai cricket ground. The feeling is always different when you have a home. I still feel it.” that feeling when I come to comment. It feels like home, and I feel so good. My chest swells with pride.”
History at Wankhede Stadium in brief
