The 15 best genre films in summer 2025 (and where to watch them)

It remains for a few weeks in the season of summer films 2025, and we must say that it was quite great. Many large superproductions have really delivered. Many small films have come out of nowhere to surprise us. And even some streaming titles have made their mark. Below, we have our choices for the 15 best gender films released during the summer of 2025, from the first weekend in May to the end of August.

15 Thunderbolt

Spoiler: this is the only Marvel film on this list. Not that we didn’t like Fantastic Four– It’s actually quite fun – but Thunderbolt Offered us a more exciting ride, with an incredible distribution of characters and a very much better tease towards the future.

Thunderbolt is now available on digital download and Blu-ray. He will strike Disney + on August 27.

14 Clown in a cornfield

There is something to say about a film that gives you exactly what it promises, does it well and does it correctly. It is Clown in a cornfield. Read our criticism here.

13 Together

Together East almost An incredible film. Instead, it’s just a very, very good, rude film out of two people who are infected with something that continues to force them together. Great performances, an interesting relational dynamic and an end of killer. A little something is missing to put it above, but it is always worth seeing.

Together is now in theaters and will broadcast later this year.

12 Jaws @ 50

Yeah, I launched you a documentary. This summer marked the 50th anniversary of one of the best gender films of all time, the film Killer Shark JawsAnd this documentary apparently plunging into all aspects of its development, production and reception is only a joy to look at. (And even if it is not exactly focused on genre, if you want another big doc of this summer, Pee like him On HBO Max is masterful.)

11 Bring it back

The horror film 2023 Talk to me It was absolutely incredible, and its directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, followed with that, not as good, but in a way even more disturbing the history of horror. Sally Hawkins gives a frightening head performance in a film that presents the most horrible visuals of the year.

10 The Toxic Avenger

If you were wondering: “How can io9 make a list of the best gender films in summer when summer is not yet finished?” Here is the answer. We saw the last major, coming to theaters later this month, and it is a Doozy. Gory, hilarious and a beautiful tribute to the Trooma films that inspired him. Read our criticism here.

9. How to train your dragon

If How to train your dragon It was something we saw for the first time this summer, it would be easily the best film on this list. The original is incredible. However, this “incredible” film is again this film, live, so even if it’s really wonderful, it drops the list a bit. Read our criticism here.

8 Elio

Elio Perhaps one of the largest bombs at the summer box office, but it is not for lack of quality. The film itself is a funny, sincere and incredibly beautiful adventure which is up there with the best recent outing of Pixar. So it’s not Wall-e or anything, but it is certainly equal to Become red, souletc. Read our criticism.

Elio will be available digitally on August 19.

7 28 years later

When Oscar’s winner, Danny Boyle, and the legendary writer Alex Garland joined forces to return to the franchise they put on the map, you knew that it had to be good. And it was. 28 years later is an intense and heartbreaking piece of construction of the world with a lot of action, emotion and massive penis. We cannot believe that we only have to wait until a few more months for its suite. Read our criticism here.

6. Kpop demon hunters

We can say that the greatest success and summer surprise were on Netflix. Who could have guessed? This story of a K-POP group that protects the universe from evil is not only fun and funny, but it also has a part of the most catchy film music of recent memory. He loses a little vapor towards the end, but whatever. It’s always an explosion.

5 Final destination Bloodlines

The sixth film of a franchise is rarely the best film of a franchise, but it is exactly this Final destination Bloodlines East. By telling a great radical story that connects the whole series, directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein brought a set of victims unfathomable to the film, which makes him frightening and disgusting but also a complete explosion to watch. 4 Superman

James Gunn did it. He was able to bring Superman Back in a big way with a film as massive as the character demands it but as bizarre and out of the rails in a way that we did not expect. It is the best superhero film of summer. Read our criticism here.

3 and 3 Weapons

The best summer horror film follows a broken city when a class of children mysteriously disappears in the night. What is happening then must be seen to be believed and, we think, will be monitored and discussed again and again. Read our criticism here.

Weapons is currently in theaters and is likely to hit streaming later this year.

2 Predator: Killer killer

Even before the director Dan Trachtenberg adds an even better and more exciting final credit scene to the already brilliant scene he had, Predator: Killer killer was a winner. You just didn’t live until you saw predators fight over the centuries. Read our criticism here.

A quick detour …

This is my list, and I will do what I want. This is why, although it is not technically a right genre film, I just have to call an additional film. It is Heads of stateThe film John Cena / Idris Elba which was presented this year on Prime Video. This rather simple action film is so fun, I couldn’t believe it. Light years in front of most films that are streaming. Look at it here. And now…

1 and 1 Chuck’s life

And yet, among all superheroes, killer animation and terrifying horror, it is a not so simple film on the life of a simple man who advances on the rest. The adaptation by Mike Flanagan of the short story of Stephen King is so cool, optimistic and rewatchable that we have not stopped thinking about it since we saw it. If you’ve missed it in the rooms, see it as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed. Our opinion is there.
