The Australian government faces criticism not to tackle play advertisements fairly quickly, with fears that young people are exposed to harmful messages.

The former Tabcorp and the chief of ASX Elmer Funke Kupper have an editorial in the Australian financial journal which calls for a repression on game advertisements in Australia, after which he describes as “an invasion” of game advertisements during the Grand Final of the AFL on September 27. It was the most watched game of 2025, attracting more than four million viewers across the country.

Kupper claims that around 750,000 of them were under 20 years old, exposing young people to a high proportion of game announcements. This has renewed calls to the Australian government to speed up progress during a gaming announcements.

“I was surprised to be confronted with several sports betting advertisements in the thirty minutes before the rebound of the center,” wrote Kupper. “I thought the AFL and the government had treated this and prohibited game advertising near the games.

“The government commission and AFL should reconsider their position. The implementation of stricter game advertising controls should be one of the simplest acts of leadership. Do not have game advertisements during the grand final of the AFL next year. ”

Gaming advertisements in Australia

The conversation around game advertisements in Australia has been underway for several years now. The government was criticized in February 2025 when he turned around perceived on the subject, following a delay in potential reform at the end of 2024. In summer, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that a pure and simple prohibition of advertising to the game would be difficult to apply.

Critics like Kupper assume that the Australian government is reluctant to give up hundreds of millions of advertising revenues from game advertisements. Playing companies represent around $ 180 million a year in television advertising, or about 6% of the total free income.

However, supporters of a pure and simple ban continue to argue that it is a question of public health. Indeed, Australia would not be the only country to pursue such a measure, the United Kingdom which recently went from reform of advertising games and Japan repressing the advertisements of the casino.
