Hard vs
There are two types of paddleboards you can buy, inflatable or rigid, aka rigid. One is not better than the other – it depends on your current situation and what you are looking to get out of your group.
Rigid paddles are better at sea because they are more durable and can withstand the impact of rough rocks and coral reefs. It is also stable when you hit open water, boat wakes and waves. They are often heavy, difficult to transport and difficult to store.
Foldable paddleboards allow you to easily store them in small spaces such as apartments, studios or the trunk of your car. It’s also easy to get to the water, especially if you don’t have a car or a convertible.
Procedure
You can buy paddleboards that are ergonomically designed for certain purposes. There are different lengths, widths and styles to add functionality.
- Inspection: Touring paddles are meant to travel long distances on flat water and allow you to navigate rough water without any problems. They tend to be long with straight noses to increase speed but are wider than a speed board to help you stay focused on long runs.
- Competition: Running paddles are made for running. They are usually tall, thin and fast enough to drive. Expect to pay $1,000 for a good skateboard.
- Yoga: Yoga paddles are longer and wider than your average SUP, so you can feel more comfortable when you practice what you want. The footboard also tends to take up a lot of board space, so you have a lot of room to move around.
- Fishing: Fishing paddleboards are similar to yoga SUPs in that they are longer and wider for better performance. They also have a stable deck to help lower the center of gravity and improve control. Not to mention, plenty of D-rings to secure your fishing gear.
- Many people: Most paddleboards can hold up to 250 to 300 pounds. Paddleboards that are designed to fit one person are very large, large and can be 20 feet in length.
- Rest: Most paddlers want to float in the water and steer without falling. A paddleboard can be between 10 to 11 feet long and offers the perfect combination of speed, stability and maneuverability.
Budget
You can find many different types of paddleboards and paddleboards, so you can enjoy the sport on almost any budget. Inflatable boards tend to be cheaper than solid ones, while speed boards are some of the most expensive you can buy. For a good board, prices start at $300 and go up to $2,000 or more.
Storage
Once upon a time, I lived in a one bedroom, 750 square foot apartment and bought 10 feet of lumber. Did I have a detached garage? No. Did I have an amazingly large closet? No, I didn’t have that either. Not understanding the size of the paddleboard, I didn’t think about the storage. I had to buy wall screws to hold my board above my bed, almost like a makeshift board. Before I knew it, my place was like a beach house in the middle of Reno, Nevada.
The moral of the story is, make sure you have a solid SUP storage facility before you buy if that’s the type you’re leaning towards.
