The British woman pleads guilty for killing the man while he was drunk on e-scooter

A British backpacker pleaded guilty of having killed a man in Australia after hitting him while driving an e-scooter with a level of alcohol more than three times the legal limit.
Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch, Worcestershire, had drunk with a friend on a Saturday afternoon in May when she was expelled from a bar because the two were drunk, the court said earlier.
The pair hired an e-scooter in the evening, and Kemp was led at speeds of 20 to 25 km / h (12 to 15 MPH) when it struck Thanh Phan, 51, on a pavement in the city center of Perth.
The father of two children struck his head on the sidewalk and died in the hospital of brain bleeding two days later.
Kemp’s passenger was also injured in the accident – supporting a fractured skull and a broken nose – but his injuries were not deadly.
Monday, in the Perth first instance court, Kemp – appearing by video link – pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death in a state of intoxication. The accusation brings a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
Prosecutors abandoned a second accusation of dangerous driving causing bodily injury to his passenger.
Earlier, the court learned that Kemp’s alcohol level was 0.158 after the accident, more than three times the legal limit of 0.05 in Australia.
The prosecutors said that video surveillance showed that the CCTV showed that KEMP “inexplicably dangerous” driving before it strikes Mr. Phan, who was waiting to cross the road.
In a declaration by Mr. Phan’s family earlier this year, the structure engineer was described as a husband, a father, a beloved brother and friend.
Kemp’s lawyer Michael Tudori said she was relieved after pleading guilty and hoped to be convicted before Christmas, according to local media.
“You could see that she was ready to say these words, you know, she obviously did something stupid,” Tudori told ABC.
Kemp, who was in Western Australia with a working vacation visa, will remain in detention until his conviction.
