Former President of the Ukrainian Parliament Andriy Parubiy was shot in Lviv, the Ukrainian authorities said.

Police received information reporting the shooting in the Frandivsk district in Lviv, west of Ukraine, around local time around noon on Saturday. It is not clear if the author has been arrested.

Parubiy, 54, has become of importance within the framework of the Maidan movement of Ukraine, which pleaded for closer links with the European Union (EU) and brought down the former pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described him as a “terrible murder” and sent his condolences.

We don’t know who was behind the attack. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Parubiy has been shot down several times by a shooter on an electric bicycle disguised as a mail.

National Ukraine police, LVIV regional police and the security service are investigating murder.

In a press release, Zelensky wrote on Telegram: “The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko and the Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko have just reported in the known first circumstances of the terrible murder in Lviv. Andriy Parubiy was killed. My condolences to his family and his friends.

“All the necessary forces and means are deployed to investigate and find the killer.”
