Seven expelled migrants from the United States have arrived in Rwanda, the first of the 250 which should be taken care of by the African State within the framework of an agreement with the administration of President Donald Trump.

“The first group of seven approved migrants arrived in Rwanda in mid-August,” said Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo.

It has not given any details on their nationalities, explaining only that four of them would remain in Rwanda, three who choose to return to their country of origin.

Rights defense groups have warned that such deportations could violate international law if people are sent to countries where they risk torture or other abuses.

Trump focused on a radical mass expulsion system to eliminate undocumented migrants from the United States since its entry into force in January.

Until now, at least a dozen nations have agreed to accept migrants expelled from other countries.

“Whatever their specific needs, all of these people will receive appropriate support and protection from the Rwandan government,” Makolo told the professional pro-government in Rwanda.

Expelled people were hosted by “an international organization” and would be visited by the International Organization on Migration (IOM) and Rwandan social services, she added.

An IOM spokesperson confirmed to the new AFP agency that he had seen the migrants “assess their basic needs”, without giving more details.

Earlier this month, Ms. Makolo told the BBC that Rwanda was going ahead with the agreement because “almost every Rwandan family had experienced the difficulties of travel”.

Rwanda crossed a genocide in the mid -90s – and the government wanted to provide help to other migrants, maintaining its place can provide them with a safe place despite the criticism of its human rights file.

Under an agreement concluded with the United Nations Agency for Refugees and the African Union six years ago, nearly 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers trapped in Libya were evacuated to Rwanda between September 2019 and April 2025. The UN says that many of these people were then resettled elsewhere.

Rwanda had an agreement with the United Kingdom, agree with the Conservative government in 2022, to accept asylum seekers.

But the United Kingdom abandoned the program, which has faced many legal challenges, after the Labor government of Sir Keir Starmer took office in July from last year.

The United Kingdom had paid Rwanda 240 million pounds sterling ($ 310 million), even by building places to house asylum seekers. We do not know what happened to these installations.

It is not clear either if there is a financial element to the most recent agreement in Rwanda.

In June, Trump’s administration supervised the signing of a peace agreement in Washington between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of an ongoing peace process aimed at putting an end to three decades of instability in the region.

Kigali was accused of having supported the rebellious M23 group involved in the conflict in Dr. Congo Voisin – an accusation which she denied.
