A freight train collapsed on a two-story bus in a crossing northwest of Mexico City early on Monday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 40, the authorities announced.

The accident took place in an industrial area of warehouses and factories in the city of Atlacomulco, about 130 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.

The Mexico Civil Defense Agency said via X that the authorities still worked on the accident site, and the state prosecutor’s office said it had opened an investigation. The Herradura line bus of Plata was torn apart by the collision.

The agency said 10 people had been killed and 41 injured. Local media reports said the injured had been taken to state hospitals.

The bus company did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

The train line, the Canadian Kansas Pacific, the city of Mexico, is part of the Canadian City of the Pacific Kansas (CPKC), based in Calgary, which operates a rail network that includes lines in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The company confirmed the accident and sent its condolences to the families of the victims. He said his staff were on the spot and was cooperated with the authorities.

The authorities did not immediately give details on how the accident occurred, but a video has circulated on social platforms showed that the bus in intense circulation moved slowly through the railroad tracks when the rapid moving train suddenly appeared outside the frame, driving the bus to its point. The momentum of the train bore the bus on the tracks and outside the frame.

There were no visible passage doors or other signals. Just before the accident, cars could be seen crossing the tracks as traffic advancing.

The cars that went in the other direction have ceased to cross the slopes when the bus led, although a motorcycle traveled a few seconds before the accident. The train struck the passenger side of the bus.

‘Help me’

Another video showed the bus to rest on the side of the slopes. The roof of the bus had disappeared and people could be seen moving to the upper level while the train slowed down.

A woman could be heard to cry: “Help me, help me.”

Rebeca Miranda expected tracks on Monday for the authorities to tell him what would happen with the bodies of the victims. Her sister and daughter-in-law of her sister were on the bus when she was struck around 6:30 am, she said.

His sister was taken to the hospital and was able to speak, but the other woman died in the accident, said Miranda. They were both domestic. Miranda said that she couldn’t be with her sister in the hospital because she needed to discover what would be done with the body of her sister’s sister-in-law.

Beyond a blurred line of yellow ribbon, a bus is visible next to a train. The bus is strongly damaged on the top, with flattened seats near the front. Some people remain, including a couple in military uniforms.

Miranda said the bus shouldn’t have crossed the tracks just when the train was submitting to the intersection. “It’s really unhappy. Why? To beat the train. They are lives.”

According to the most recent report of the Mexico Rail Transport Regulation Agency published in September, accidents in level passages are the most common types of railway accidents and have been increasing the trend in recent years.

Last year, there were 800 against 602 in 2020, according to the report. The document did not include the number of victims involved in accidents.

Last month, six people died when a train hit several vehicles in the state of Guanajuato. In 2019, nine people were killed when a freight train struck a passenger bus crossing the central state tracks of Queretaro.
