The German game regulator, GGL, warns against illegal social bets

The German game regulator, known as the joint gambling authority of the stats (GGL), has “urgent” an informed of participation in social betting.
The regulator reminded people that social bets, which, according to the GGL, also include entertainment betting, are not eligible for permission under the applicable German law and are therefore illegal.
It was in recent weeks and months that the GGL has experienced increasingly recorded reports on social betting in the regional and national media, some people even betting on the outcome of the Ukraine War.
This is due to the growing public presence of this type of game which led the authority to specifically warn the population and to inform them of the legal situation and the dangers of illegal bets.
According to the GGL, social bets refer to the events of public or social life, such as political elections, court decisions, natural disasters, social events or other non -sporting developments.
“Such formats are particularly sensitive to manipulation, because they are often based on unclear, subjective or controllable events,” explains the authority.
It is because of the high risk of manipulation that these bets are not eligible for the approval of the state treaty on the game. The legislator only authorizes bets on the sporting events defined with verifiable results and clear rules as eligible for approval.
In Germany, online game suppliers who have received a state permit are all visibly listed on the official white list. It also includes gaming offers that are not under the supervision of the GGL, but under the supervision of other German game authorities. This includes some lotteries and casino games.
“All the gaming offers on the Internet that are not on the white list are illegal. Consumers must therefore discover it by examining the official white list if the game provider in question has a state permit,” said GGL in a FAQ on its website.
