The long -term acquisition of Vancouver Whitecaps of German legend Thomas Müller has finally become a reality.

The Whitecaps teased the announcement on social networks, first publishing a photo showing a panel of the Trans Canada motorway pointing to “Vancoüver” with the legend “Here We Go”, followed in a quick succession by a one -minute video in which Müller holds his jersey n ° 13 and his states “Whitecaps, let’s make history”.

The longtime star of Bayern Munich and the World Cup champion have signed for the rest of the 2025 season with an option for 2026, and will officially join the reception awaiting his international transfer certificate, his visa and work permit, according to the Whitecaps.

“I am delighted to meet the team and my new teammates,” said Müller in a statement. “I think everyone knows that the city of Vancouver is very beautiful, known around the world, but also, the Whitecaps are looking for something special this year.”

The Whitecaps are at a point behind San Diego FC for first place in the ranking of Major League Soccer Western Conference with 10 regular season games to play, six of them at home in British Columbia.

Müller is expected to arrive in Vancouver on Wednesday August 13, with his introductory press conference and his first training session the next day.

“On the field, he is one of the most intelligent players we are currently having during this decade of football,” said Whitecaps Sporting, Axel Schuster.

“He won so many titles, literally all the title that you can win with the club that he was. We are joking that a few titles that he still lacks are the Canadian championship (and) the MLS Cup.”

In what had to be the greatest secrecy in the sports world of Vancouver, the Whitecaps of the MLS announced Wednesday that they had signed the German superstar Thomas Müller of Bayern Munich. Matthias Lüttenberg, German ambassador to Canada, said that he used to have occasional hockey in German – but Müller is the first “brilliant star” to come to the world of football.

Müller said that conversations with the former teammate of Bayern and former Whitecap Alphonso Davies helped cement his decision to come to Vancouver.

“I spoke to Alphonso. He told me a lot of good things about the city and on the Whitecaps, so I was a little pumped,” he said.

Müller’s announcement is another highest point in a surprising season that has seen the Whitecaps challenge for first place in the League and qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup final, the regional crown of the best team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

However, the future of Whitecaps in Vancouver remains in the air. Last year, the owners announced that they were preparing to sell the club in the midst of dissatisfaction with the British Columbia as the club’s original stadium.

In a statement on Wednesday, Schuster said that the owners of Whitecaps – Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, Jeff Mallett and Steve Nash – continue to work on solutions to keep the club in Vancouver.

“With the discussions that we recently had on a new stadium project, and now by making such a signature of engagement, I think we emphasize that what we have already said, that nothing changes, we continue to build this club,” said Schuster.
