Us Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot down a man near Chicago Friday after driving his car in a group of agents.

A spokesperson for the Department of Internal Security said that Ice was trying to stop man, but he resisted and headed for the group. An agent was then dragged by his vehicle.

The agent, who said the department, feared for his life, pulled his weapon and opened fire.

The driver, Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, was declared dead in the hospital shortly after, said officials.

“During a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and tried to drive his vehicle in the arrest team, hitting an officer and dragging him afterwards when he had fled the premises,” said a statement.

The ice agent suffered “serious injuries” in the incident, officials said, but were in a stable state in the hospital.

The Ministry of Internal Security said that Mr. Villegas-Gonzales had reckless driving history and was an undocumented migrant. He entered the country “on an unknown date and hour,” they said.

A spokesman for the local police service of Franklin Park said he had not been involved in the incident.

The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, wrote in an online article: “This is a developing situation and the inhabitants of Illinois deserve a complete factual accounting of what happened today to ensure transparency and responsibility.”

Franklin Park is a suburb of around 18,000 people near O’Hare airport, northwest of Chicago. About half of its population is Hispanic.

Immigration officials increased law enforcement activities in the Chicago region this week on the Trump administration orders.
