The UK Gambling Commission published the 2024 Gambling Survey for Great Britain, which shows that almost half of British adults are playing.

The survey collects data for the largest study dedicated to the world on the participation, behavior and consequences of the game. Produced by the National Center for Social Research and the University of Glasgow, the survey brought together several results, including 48% of adults in Great Britain had played in the last four weeks.

This number falls at only 28% when you exclude those who only bought lottery tickets. Of this number, which played at all, 42% evaluated their last experience as a positive, while 21% evaluated it negatively.

Regarding the game motivations, the vast majority (85%) said that they were after a large financial victory, while 72% put it in the game. In 2024, the survey indicates that 2.7% of adults obtained eight or more on the problem of severity of the problematic game (PGSI), a level described as “statistically stable” compared to 2023.

Wider trends found in the investigation

The game committee used the survey data to publish two other reports. The first highlights the risk profiles of regular players who play on a weekly basis, while the second is based on the previous understanding of the potential negative consequences of the game.

“The investigation into the game for Great Britain is a key construction element of the evidence that helps the government, industry and other partners to understand both game behavior and the potential consequences of the game,” said Andrew Rhodes, director general of the game committee. “This year’s results deepen our understanding of the consequences of the game and provide a crucial overview of the most frequent. We strongly encourage operators to use these evidence to consider risks within their own customers’ bases. ”

In terms of exploitable movements, Rhodes continued by stressing that the study lessons led the Commission to introduce light financial vulnerability checks on those who spend £ 150 per month, reduce the intensity of online games by prohibiting automatic reading and slowing down the speed of the game and tightening age verification in the premises.

“We have also prohibited potentially harmful marketing offers involving consumers to make two types of game games, such as betting and playing locations, and limited the number of times bonus funds must be replenished before a consumer can withdraw the gains,” he said. “From the end of October, our new rules will give consumers controls on deposit limits and all game companies should encourage their customers to set a financial limit before making their first deposit.”

Other measures include setting limits in time and expenses in land casinos, as well as the introduction of safer game messages on machines.
