A police officer died of injuries suffered during a response to a shooting outside the siege of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), near Emory University.

The Atlanta police department said that the incident, which took place on Friday, involved a “single shooter” who was now dead.

The police identified the officer killed as David Rose, 33, who had two children with a third on the way, reported the American partner of the BBC CBS News. He had been killed and taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.

There was no report of civil injuries resulting from the shooting, said the mayor of Atlanta City.

The American media, citing an anonymous police officer, reported a theory that the alleged shooter thought he was sick following a vaccine against the coronavirus.

Media relationships also suggested that the father of the man called the police on the day of the shooting believing that his son was suicidal.

CDC director Susan Monarez said the center had “a broken heart” by the attack.

“A courageous agent of the local police gave his life, and another was injured, after a shooter opened fire on at least four CDC buildings,” she wrote in an article on X.

“Dekalb county police, CDC security and Emory University responded immediately and decisively, helping to prevent damage caused by our staff and our community.”

On Friday, in a press briefing, police said they had read an active shooter around 4:50 p.m. local time (21:50 BST) at an intersection on the “immediately” road in front of the CDC campus.

Agents of several agencies responded, including federal and state partners, added the police.

The Emory University posted at the time on social networks: “Active shooter on the Emory Atlanta campus at Emory Point CVS. Run, Hide, Fight.”

The CDC campus has received several series of shots in the buildings.

The police said they found the shooter “struck by gunshots” on the second floor of a CVS pharmacy by the intersection – but could not specify on Friday if it came from the police or self -infliction.

A refuge in place was lifted about an hour and a half after the shooting was reported, according to CBS News.

The police service has since said that there was “no continuous threat” against the campus or the surrounding district.

The media reported that CDC employees were invited to work remotely on Monday.
