A court in Seoul is issuing a request for his arrest, saying there are “concerns” that Yoon will ‘damage evidence’.
A court in South Korea has approved the arrest of President Yoon Suk Yeol for wanting to declare martial law last month.
The Seoul Western District High Court on Sunday approved a legal request for Yoon’s arrest after hours of deliberations, saying there were “concerns” that Yoon would “destroy evidence”.
Last Wednesday, Yoon became the first South Korean president to be arrested. South Korean investigators investigating Yoon on charges of treason asked a Seoul court on Friday to extend his detention after he refused to be questioned.
Mr. Yoon and his lawyers on Saturday appeared in front of the court judge for the trial and argued for his release. His arrest could be the start of a long prison term for him, lasting months or more.
He is facing treason charges related to his Dec. 3 announcement, which has fueled the country’s political turmoil since it was established in the late 1980s.
The anti-corruption office, which is leading a joint investigation by the police and the military, can now extend the jail term to 20 days, when it will hand over the case to prosecutors for prosecution.
Yoon’s lawyers may also file an arrest warrant.
