The Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA) shared a declaration of its disappointment in the adoption of the bill for the ban on the Californian competition.

The SGLA has criticized the decision of the Government Organization Committee of the California Assembly to adopt Bill 831 of the Assembly (AB 831), which would see online social games with prohibited competition promotions in California.

In a public press release, the management of the SGLA said that the bill would remove more than a billion dollars in direct and indirect economic activity through the state of California, potentially depriving the government of the state of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenues each year.

“Today’s audience has revealed the total contempt of the Committee for the facts, the economic reality and the voices of tens of thousands of Californians, all to give monopoly power to the tribes who have already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Las Vegas and California Coastal Properties,” said Jeff Duncan, Executive Director of SGLA and ancient Congestman. “During all this time, the adoption of this bill would refuse our tribal partners the very opportunities that the supporters themselves used. If this harmful bill moves through the assembly, we hope that Governor Newsom will see it for the bad policy that it is and the veto AB 831.

“As the Committee heard today, the entire premise of this bill is false. Supporters have always said that the online competition is illegal throughout this process. If it were true, then what is the need for AB831?

“The reality is that supporters know that this industry is legal. The bill does not concern the clarification of the law. It is a question of modifying the law to give some rich exclusive tribes while closing a legal industry.”

Opposition to the competition bill

The SGLA maintains that more than 16,000 Californians are opposed to the bill, having written nearly 33,000 emails have spent nearly 4,500 calls to legislators trying to block it. Several Californian tribes have also been vocal in their opposition to the bill, while groups like Californians United for a responsible budget also arose to block the bill.

The committee also heard complaints concerning the “despair” of supporters of AB 831, the SGLA claiming that people have received threats, supporters saying that “toe labels will be useful to identify our closest parent”.

Rather than the prohibition of the competition, the SGLA defends “a modern regulatory framework which guarantees robust protections of consumers, supports tribal self -determination, preserves the choice of players and exploits the economic potential of online social games to strengthen the economy of California.”
