A Swedish already found guilty of having carried out jihadist attacks in Europe was imprisoned for life for “serious war crimes and terrorist crimes” for the brutal murder of a pilot in Syria 10 years ago.

A Stockholm court returned the verdict to Osama Krayem, which had been imprisoned for the attacks in Paris and Brussels in 2015 and 2016.

The Jordanian pilot of the Air Force LT Moaz al-Kasasbeh was captured when his plane fell in Syria during a mission against the Islamic State (IE) group in 2014.

Jordan confirmed that he died after a horrible video seemed to show that the 26 -year -old was burned alive in a cage.

Krayem had denied the accusations, reported the Swedish public broadcaster, SVT, said that he was not aware of the murder plans.

Although the evidence has shown that the fire that killed Lieutenant Kasasbeh was lit by another man, Krayem was also involved in the murder, the court said.

“The accused, through his actions, contributed so actively to the death of the pilot that he should be considered an author,” said President Anna Liljenberg Gullesjo in a statement.

He was on the execution site “in uniform and armed, and was filmed,” added the declaration.

Krayem, 32, who is already serving a 30 -year sentence for his role in the Paris attacks and a lifelong term for the Brussels attacks, was sentenced to a second perpetuity sentence by the Stockholm court.

The judge added that Krayem’s actions were to “keep the victim before and during the execution and take him to the cage where he was lit”.

The court also granted compensation to the parents and sisters of Lieutenant Kasasbeh of around 80,000 Swedish Kronor ($ 8,200 / 6,9.19 of £) each.

Lieutenant Kasasbeh was captured when his plane went near the city of Raqqa during a mission against in December 2014.

At the time of his death in early 2015, Jordan – which was part of a coalition fight led by the United States is in Syria – had attempted to guarantee its release as part of an exchange of prisoners.

“It is painful that my parents are again confronted with this event, but we are grateful that the Swedish authorities wish to do us justice,” said the brother of the pilot, Jawdat al-Kasasbeh, to the Swedish Radio broadcaster when charges were initially announced.

Krayem is from the Swedish city of Malmo and went to Syria in September 2014 to fight.

In June 2022, he was convicted of his role in the Paris attacks in November 2015 – in which 130 people were killed – and for planning a separate attack on Amsterdam airport.

A year later, he was also found guilty of terrorist murder for his role in Brussels attacks that killed 32 people.
