The Vikings of Minnesota will be without Quarterrière JJ McCarthy for two to four weeks with an ankle injury, forcing them to turn to the veteran Carson Wentz.

McCarthy, the choice of first round of the Vikings in 2024, was diagnosed with an elevated ankle sprain, which he suffered in a disappointing performance in the 22-6 minnesota defeat against the Falcons of Atlanta on Sunday.

After marking three affected in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings to a return in week 1 against the Bears in Chicago, McCarthy endured a nightmare in prime time against the Falcons. He finished 11 out of 21 for 158 yards with no touch and two interceptions. He was dismissed six times and has grown three times, one of which was recovered by Atlanta.

McCarthy missed all his recruit season with a torn meniscus and, after the beginnings at home in punishment, the head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed his disappointment that his quarterrier will not learn from his first defeat.

“It’s overwhelming,” said O’Connell on Monday. “Because you just want it to be a daily activation process of all aspects of development and learning.”

Wentz will now take over, with the second overall choice of the 2016 draft which begins for a sixth team in as many seasons.

The Vikings only signed Wentz on August 24, but O’Connell was impressed by the training veteran last week when he had to intervene for McCarthy, whose fiancée gave birth to their first child last Thursday.

“He (Wentz) was really impressive last week,” said O’Connell. “In a way, you felt the best presence in command.

“He is really intelligent, a guy who played a lot of football and he has been able to go to a place where he felt very comfortable for the past two weeks if he needed to go to the football match. And now he will have a week of preparation to prepare to go and play.”

The Vikings welcome the Bengals of Cincinnati, the quarter of which leaving Joe Burrow was released for three months with Turf Toe, Sunday before the matches against the Steelers of Pittsburgh and Cleveland Browns in Dublin and London respectively.

With a bye in week 6, McCarthy could resume action during week 7 against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles if the injury maintains him indeed four weeks.
