The White House says that doctors can gain suspended visa fees H-1B

Doctors could be eligible for the exemptions from the new fees of $ 100,000 from the Trump administration for highly qualified H-1B visa requests, the White House said on Monday, after some of the largest medical organizations have called the risk to rural America where there is already a shortage of providers.
The advertising decree published on Friday said that requests can be deleted if the internal security secretary determines that the hiring of these workers on an individual basis, or to work for a specific company or industry is “in the national interest”.
“The proclamation allows potential exemptions, which may include doctors and medical residents,” said White House spokesman Taylor Rogers in an email on Monday in Bloomberg News. “In the end, the Trump administration fled to the language of proclamation.”
The Ministry of Internal Security did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
For hospitals, the H-1B visa program is crucial to recruiting doctors in remote regions of the country where there are serious shortages of health workers in some cases.
The actions of HCA Healthcare Inc., a large hospital operator, increased up to 1.4% after the news of renunciations for potential doctors. Tenet Healthcare Corp. increased up to 3.1%.
Health care employers often spare medical residents and other doctors as part of the H-1B program. The president of the American Medical Association, Bobby Mukkamala, a leading and neck surgeon of Michigan, called on international medicine graduates “an essential element of our work as a doctor”, before the Trump administration declared only doctors and people in training can be eligible for exemptions.
It is not yet clear if doctors and medical residents will be able to obtain an exemption across the industry or if they will have to request exemptions on a case -by -case basis.
Exemption from some requirement health agents could be particularly useful for rural communities, where doctors and other providers are often rare. Most of the United States are lacking in sufficient primary care physicians, according to a 2024 government analysis. This report provided that the country would face a shortage of more than 87,000 primary care physicians by 2037.
More than 76 million Americans live in places where the government has appointed a shortage of primary care physicians, according to federal data compiled by the KFF health research group.
The American Hospital Association, a commercial group which represents thousands of health establishments, said that it was examining the potential impact of H-1B visa changes.
“We will also work with the administration to highlight the importance of including health care staff in potential exemptions from these changes,” said a spokesperson for AHA.
Federal data from the United States citizenship and immigration services show high-level health systems, including Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, among the main sponsors of the H-1B visa health care industry. Mayo has more than 300 approved visas, according to data. Payment of costs could add millions to labor costs in major medical systems.
In June, more than 4,000 hospitals and research centers sponsored visas.
The Trump administration has supported measures to reduce health spending, defending a bill that reduced Medicaid spending by around $ 10 billion over 10 years, while allocating $ 50 billion with rural health over five years.
The coverage of Medicaid is slightly higher in rural areas than urban areas, according to a KFF analysis of government data.
