Thousands of people have been evacuated to the Philippines while the nation accumulates for a super typhoon which was described by the regional authorities as potentially “catastrophic”.

The Super Typhon Ragasa, wrapping gusts of 230 km / h (143 MPH), is expected to score land on the northern islands that are not very populated on Monday, before going to the west to the south of China.

Ragasa presents a “high risk of potentially fatal storm overvoltage” with cutting -edge heights exceeding 3 m (10 feet), said the Philippin meteorological office.

Government schools and offices in large regions of the country, including the Capital Manila, have been closed and the authorities have warned of generalized floods and landslides and damage to houses and infrastructure.

The distant batanes or the Babuyan Islands, where Ragasa is expected to become earth, is home to around 20,000 people, many of whom live in poverty.

The islands are around 740 km (460 miles) from Taiwan, where nearly 300 people were evacuated from Hualien, a county to the east.

Ragasa should not hit Taiwan directly, but should dip the east coast of the island with heavy rain.

Forest areas and nature trails across the south and east of Taiwan have been closed since early Monday, while certain ferry services have also been suspended.

A super typhoon in the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane.

Authorities in the Chinese province of Guangdong have advised residents to prepare for the “catastrophic” and “large -scale disaster”. Heavy rains and strong winds will be felt on Tuesday, two days before the storm touches the ground.

In Hong Kong, the authorities claim that the weather “will deteriorate Tuesday” Tuesday, while the Education Office said that it deliberated school arrangements.

Ragasa, known locally in the Philippines under the name of Nando, occurs while the nation of Southeast Asia is nodded by weeks of generalized floods caused by an unusually ferocious monsoon.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of people protested across the country against government corruption which was blamed for a serious lack of flood control infrastructure.
