Trump and Lula discuss for 30 minutes, exchange their numbers and the Brazilian boss again requests the lifting of customs duties of 40 %

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva asked US President Donald Trump on Monday during a telephone conversation to lift customs duties of 40 % imposed by the United States government on Brazilian imports.
The leaders maintained themselves for 30 minutes, exchanged their phone numbers and Lula reiterated her invitation to Trump to attend the next climate summit in Belém, according to a statement from Lula.
Later, Trump posted on Truth Social that he had had a good conversation with Lula. “We have discussed many things, but we have mainly focused on the economy and trade between our two countries,” wrote Trump, adding that leaders “will have other discussions and will meet in the not too distant future, both in Brazil and in the United States”.
The Trump administration had imposed customs duties of 40 % in Brazilian products in July, in addition to the customs duties of 10 % imposed earlier. Lula reminded Trump that Brazil was one of the three G20 countries with which the United States maintains a trade surplus.
The Trump administration justified these prices by saying that Brazilian policy and criminal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro are an economic emergency. Earlier this month, Bolsonaro was found guilty of attempted coup after losing his candidacy for re-election in 2022 and a Supreme Court court sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison.
Lula also offered to go to Washington to meet Trump, to continue the conversation they started during their meeting at the United Nations General Assembly at the beginning of the month.
