STERLING, Virginia (Reuters) – President-elect Donald Trump arrived in the Washington area on Saturday evening to celebrate his return to office ahead of an inauguration ceremony fueled by bitter cold.
Trump boarded an Air Force one sent by outgoing President Joe Biden to the Republican Party in Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump planned his transition after winning the Nov. 5 on Vice President Kamala Harris. His wife, Melania, the daughter of Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, accompanied him on Saturday’s flight.
After arriving at Dulles Airport in Virginia, Trump went to his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, outside of Washington.
Elvis Presley impersonator Leo Days cheered on the incoming president and first lady before a party of about 500 guests and a fireworks display. An aide posted a video on social media showing the singer crying as Trump watched.
Trump, 78, is scheduled to hold a meeting with his aides Capital One (NYSE:) Arena in Washington on Sunday, the evening of its opening, and the opening ceremony on Monday afternoon.
Monday’s weather forecast prompted Trump to move the inauguration ceremony from the west front of the US Capitol building to the Capitol Rotunda, and the show down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capital One Arena.
In the Capitol Rotunda, Trump will be sworn in at 12 p.m. ET (1700 GMT) and then deliver the inaugural address, the speech that usually marks the end of a president’s four-year term. He told NBC News the theme will be “unity and strength, and the word ‘justice.’
This will be the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in January 1985 that the main event has been moved indoors.

Many of the more than 220,000 ticketed visitors who watched from the US Capitol grounds will not be able to see the swearing-in from inside the building. A small section can fit into the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena where the opening ceremony will be broadcast and entertainment and participants are expected to perform.
On Saturday, Trump fans who had planned to attend the event were already marching in Washington.
Arthur Caisse, a 78-year-old retired professor, and his brother Richard Caisse, a 64-year-old small business owner, traveled from Connecticut to watch Trump’s second inauguration, after coming to inaugurate his first term in 2017.
“It’s very frustrating because we all traveled a long way to get here, and then go through the process of Congress to get tickets to the event. We finally got tickets, now, boom. They’re saying we might not be there. They can go to the (National) Mall,” he said. Arthur Caisse.
“I am not disappointed because on Monday we are restoring our country,” said Richard Caisse.
Debbie Koch, a 60-year-old who traveled from Wisconsin with her sister, said she still plans to attend Sunday night’s rally if she can get inside.
“We don’t know for sure,” he said. “We are happy to be here.”
When asked Saturday how they would handle the crowds of Trump inauguration ticket holders that couldn’t match the Capitol Rotunda or the stadium, the Secret Service referred the question to event organizers.
Trump’s inauguration committee did not respond to requests for comment Saturday.
As soon as he returns to the White House on Monday afternoon, Trump is expected to begin signing orders and directives to restrict immigration, boost US energy production and other priorities.
Trump, whose first term lasted from 2017 to 2021, refused to attend the inauguration ceremony of Biden, who defeated him in 2020. He left Washington for Florida before the ceremony, and vowed that “we will come back in a different way.”
Two weeks earlier, his supporters attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to delay lawmakers from confirming Biden’s victory.
