Donald Trump demanded an investigation into what he called a “triple sabotage” during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

In an article on social networks, the American president referred to an escalator stopping suddenly while he and the First Lady Melania Trump walked, a defective telepromitor during his speech and an audio problem in the auditorium.

A UN official said the audio system had been designed to allow people to hear speeches translated through headphones.

The UN previously said that a security mechanism could have been launched by Trump’s videographer who had fallen into the escalator while the telepromitator belonged to the American delegation.

Trump criticized incidents on Truth Social and said he was sending a letter to the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres demanding an immediate investigation.

“A real shame took place at the United Nations yesterday – not one, not two, but three very sinister events!” He wrote.

“It was not a coincidence, it was a triple sabotage at the UN. They should be ashamed of themselves.”

He also called for the arrest of people responsible for the mechanical staircase incident, referring to an article in the Times that UN workers joked by saying to deactivate the mechanical stairs.

“It was absolutely sabotage … All the safety bands of the escalator must be saved, in particular the emergency stop button. The secret services are involved,” added Trump.

Mike Waltz, American ambassador to the UN, echoed the president’s call for an official investigation, saying that the incidents were “unacceptable”.

“The United States will not tolerate threats from our security or our dignity during international forums. We are planning rapid cooperation and decisive action,” he wrote on X.

On Wednesday, the white house press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday, expressed her concerns that someone deliberately stopped the escalator.

“If someone in the UN intentionally stopped the escalator while the president and the first lady were walking, he must be dismissed and investigated immediately,” she wrote on X after the incident.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for Guterres, said that Trump’s videographer “may have inadvertently triggered the security function” during the shooting of the couple.

After the Escalator incident, Trump encountered more technical difficulties when he declared that the telepromitator did not work – although he was restored towards the end of his address.

“I can only say that the one who operates this televimmer is in great difficulty,” he said.

A UN official later declared to the BBC that the White House operated the telepromitator at the time, bringing their own laptops and branched them in the UN system.

Trump also referred to audio problems in his long post, saying that “the sound was completely extinct in the auditorium”.

“World leaders, unless they use the interpreters’ headphones, couldn’t hear anything,” he added.

In response to Trump’s comments, an official of the United Nations said: “ The audio system was designed to allow people in their place to hear speeches translated into six different languages through headphones. “”
