President Donald Trump says he started arrangements for a face -to -face meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss a path to end Ukraine’s invasion by Russia.

“I called President Putin and I started the provisions of a meeting, in a place to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” said Trump in a publication on social networks after long discussions in the White House on Monday with Zelenskyy and European leaders. “After this meeting, we will have a trilat, which would be the two presidents, and myself. Again, it was a very good early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years.”

Earlier Monday, Trump said in the talks with Zelenskyy and European leaders that a potential cease-fire and which is seized the Ukrainian territory seized by Russia should be chopped during a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders of the countries at war.

The talks at the White House occurred a few days after Trump organized Putin for a summit in an American military base in Alaska in which he tilted towards the requirements of Putin that Ukraine makes concessions on the land seized by Russia, which now controls approximately one fifth of Ukrainian territory.

“We are going to let the president pass and speak to the president and we will see how it works,” said Trump when he meets Zelenskyy and European leaders. Trump and Zelenskyy also expressed the hope of soon holding talks to three among the American, Russian and Ukrainian leaders.

Trump also said that he would support European security guarantees for Ukraine while he met Zelenskyy and the leaders of France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Finland, as well as the president of the European Commission and the NATO head.

Trump has ceased to commit American troops to a collective effort to strengthen the security of Ukraine. He said in place that there would be a “NATO” security presence and that all these details would be chopped with EU leaders.

“They want to offer protection and they feel very strongly about it and we will help them with that,” said Trump. “I think it is very important to conclude the agreement.”

Speaking on Monday before meetings of the White House, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the idea of a possible NATO peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Such a scenario could see an additional escalation and “unpredictable consequences”, warned the spokesman for the ministry Maria Zakharova.

Trump’s commitment with Zelenskyy had a surprisingly different feeling from their last meeting of the Oval Office in February. It was a disastrous moment that led Trump to abruptly end talks with the Ukrainian delegation, and a pause temporarily aid to kyiv, after he and the vice-president JD Vance complained that Zelenskyy had shown insufficient gratitude for American military aid.

Zelenskyy, at the start of the meeting, presented a letter from his wife, Olena Zelenska, for Trump’s wife, Melania. Trump delivered by hand a letter to Putin from the American First Lady asking him to consider the children affected by the conflict and put an end to the brutal war of 3 and a half years.

Trump at some point in Aiguille Zelenskyy on Ukraine who delays the elections. They had been scheduled for last year but were delayed due to the current Russian invasion. Ukrainian law does not allow the presidential elections to be held when martial law is in force.

Trump joked by saying that a similar circumstance would not play well in the United States

Zelenskyy faced criticism at his February meeting of a conservative journalist at his reunion to have appeared at the Oval Office in a long sleeve t-shirt. This time, he appeared in a dark jacket and a buttoned shirt.

Zelenskyy said that his generally less formal outfit since the start of the Russian Invasion on a large scale in 2022 is to show solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers.

Friday, the meeting gathered in a hurry on Monday was met in Alaska in Alaska with Putin. After this meeting, Trump said that the burden was now on Zelenskyy to accept the land concessions which, according to him, could end the war.

Trump said he was planning to speak to Putin after his meetings with Zelenskyy and European leaders.

“We will see in a certain period of time, not far from now, a week or two weeks, we will know if we will solve this problem or if this horrible fight will continue,” said Trump.

European leaders were excluded from the Trump summit with Putin. They want to protect Ukraine and the continent from any extended aggression of Moscow. Many arrived at the White House with the explicit objective of protecting the interests of Ukraine – a rare demonstration of diplomatic strength.

Before Monday’s meeting, Trump suggested that Ukraine could not resume Crimea, that Russia annexed in 2014, triggering an armed conflict that led to its broader invasion of 2022.

“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote on social networks on Sunday. “Remember how it started. No Obama recovery gave Crimea (12 years ago, without having been pulled!), And not to enter NATO through Ukraine. Some things never change !!!”

Zelenskyy replied with his own post Sunday evening, saying: “We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably.” He said that “peace must last”, not as it was after Russia seized Crimea and part of the donbas in eastern Ukraine eight years ago, and “Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack”.

Heavy Europeans in Washington

Putin opposes Ukraine by joining NATO, but Trump’s team says the Russian chief is open to Western allies who agree to defend Ukraine if attacked.

European leaders suggested that forging a temporary cease-fire is not out of the table. After his meeting with Putin on Friday, Trump abandoned his immediate ceasefire request and said that he would seek to obtain a final peace regulation between Russia and Ukraine-a sudden passage to a position favored by Putin.

At the start of the meeting on Monday with European leaders, German and French leaders congratulated Trump for having opened a way to peace, but they urged the American president to push Russia for a cease-fire.

“I would like to see a ceasefire from the next meeting, which should be a trilateral meeting,” said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Trump, for his part, reiterated on Monday that a broader and end of war agreement between the two countries is “very feasible”, but that “we all obviously prefer the immediate ceasefire while we are working on lasting peace”.

The other European leaders were present: the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the French president Emmanuel Macron, the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the first first Giorgia Meloni, the Finnish president Alexander Stubb and the secretary general of NATO, Mark Rutte.

‘A big step’

European leaders are still looking for concrete details on the participation of the United States in the creation of a security guarantee for Ukraine.

However, Rutte, the secretary general of NATO, described Trump’s commitment to guaranteed security “a big step, a breakthrough”.

Zelenskyy described what he said that his country should feel safe, which included a “strong Ukrainian army” thanks to the sale and training of weapons. The second part, he said, would depend on the outcome of the talks on Monday and the countries of the EU, NATO and the United States could guarantee the country torn by the war.

Trump informed Zelenskyy and European allies shortly after Putin’s meeting. The details of the discussions emerged in a dispersed way which seemed to classify the American president, who had chosen to describe no term when he appears later with Putin.

European officials have confirmed that Trump had told them that Putin was still looking for control of the entire Donbas region, even if Ukraine still controls a significant part.
