President Donald Trump warned dismissals widespread on Sunday if the federal government is stopping this week, telling NBC News that “we are going to cut many people who … we are able to cut permanent”.

“(I prefer) not doing this,” he told NBC News in an exclusive interview.

The White House doubles warnings that thousands of government jobs could be at stake if the government stops at midnight on Tuesday.

Last week, the Trump administration told federal agencies to start preparing for mass layoffs if the congress does not accept an agreement to avoid closing. If the White House follows its threat, it would mark a rupture in the previous one, as federal employees are generally summoned in such cases.

When there was a complete government closure in 2013, for example, around 850,000 employees were on leave, according to the federal budget committee.

The warning of potential mass dismissals – which was made via a note published by the Management and Budget Office – marked a significant climbing of pressure on the legislators of the Congress to leave a judgment.

However, with less than three days until the government’s financing deadline, legislators remain far from negotiations, increasing the chances of a closure.
