Trump’s tone towards Canada is suddenly more positive. What’s going on with that?

President Donald Trump spoke more positively about Canada on Tuesday than he did at any time since he won the elections last November, but that this signals imminent relief to punish prices to see.

During a 32 -minute appearance in the oval office with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump spoke of “mutual love” between the two countries, recognized Canada’s work to fight fentanyl and congratulated Carney as “a very good chef”.

Obviously, these are only words and does not equivalent to a real change in policy.

However, in comparison with its previous tirades against Canada as being unfair with the United States, its obstinate insistence on the fact that its country needs none of Canada’s main exports and its frequent direct calls for Canada to become the 51st state, Trump’s approach to his northern neighbor seemed almost warm.

Kelly Ann Shaw, senior trade advisor to Trump during her first mandate, saw encouraging signs in exchanges between Trump and Carney during the part of the reporters of their meeting.

“I spent a lot of time with the president during his meetings with the world leaders, I frankly heard him speak very openly about the dynamics with the previous Prime Minister, and it was as positive in a tone that I saw him take with anyone,” Shaw told CBC News.

“ I think they will be very happy, ‘said Trump on the potential agreement with Canada

Speaking in the oval office alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney, US President Donald Trump said Canada “will leave very happy” after their discussions on a possible price agreement.

Flavio Volpe, Canadian President of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association and a fierce critic of Trump’s trade war, also noticed the change.

“He spoke differently about Canada,” said Volpe. “It seemed to be, perhaps unconsciously, raising Canada’s status as a competitor.”

“ We want Canada to do well ”

In the automotive sector in particular, Trump has taken a more moderate tone than he has done in the last nine months. While describing Canada and the United States as competing on the automotive market, it seemed to suggest that the success of the industry is of mutual interest in the two countries.

“This is a difficult situation because we want to make our cars here,” said Trump. “At the same time, we want Canada to make cars doing cars. So we are working on formulas, and I think we will get there. “”

That and when they “arrive” are huge questions. A change in the tone of Trump without change in its prices means nothing for the industries of auto, steel, aluminum and timber in difficulty of Canada.

However, Trump suggested that something was in preparation.

Carney is a “world class leader”: Trump

US President Donald Trump sang the praises of Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday in the oval office, commenting on his management and sharing why he thinks Carney won the federal elections last year.

When asked if Canada will set off again empty of Tuesday’s visit, Trump replied: “We have a lot of things we are working on … I think they will leave very happy.”

Trump’s praise for Carney at the meeting were effusive, limiting sumptuous.

“I can tell you this, because I treat with many leaders around the world, he is a world class leader,” said Trump. “”He’s a good man. He does a great job, but he is a difficult negotiator. “”

He continued: “I think he is a great Prime Minister. I mean, he could represent me at any time.”

Carney answered this by making a scribbled gesture with his right hand and telling journalists: “Write this”.

It is both easy and risky to make too much personal relationship between two world leaders as it appears in front of the cameras.

However, experts who look at Trump closely observed that personal relationships count a lot for him and in fact influence his political thought.

“The president tends to be very relational, and there is tend to be more progress in relationships when there is real chemistry,” said Shaw.

She says he is preferable from Trump’s point of view to get along with Carney and says that the Prime Minister is intelligent to try to cultivate this.

“I think things tend in the right direction, they just take time,” said Shaw.

Some possible evidence of this trend: the part of the closed doors of the meeting ended with Trump and Carney “leader” their members of the cabinet “to land quickly” focused on steel, aluminum and energy, said the Minister of Trade Canada-US on Tuesday afternoon, the Minister of Commerce of Canada-US, Dominic Leblanc.

Leblanc said that he and the rest of the Canadian sales team remain in Washington for these talks who, according to him, could start this evening.

Although nobody – including Leblanc – predicts the result with certainty, it is the first sign of movement on the prices of steel and aluminum since Trump doubled them at 50% in June.
