Assailant commits suicide after shooting at judicial officials in central Iran.
Two members of Iran’s Supreme Court have been killed in a shooting outside the courthouse in central Tehran, according to judges and state media.
The “murder” was carried out by a gunman, who killed himself after opening fire on Saturday outside the courthouse, according to media reports.
The victims are Hojjat al-Islam Razini and Hojjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Moqisseh, who lead different branches of the court.
“(They) took part in dealing with cases against national security, espionage, and terrorism,” it added, describing the slain judges as “courageous and experienced”.
It was not immediately clear who the attacker was and what his motive was.
“Preliminary investigations show that the perpetrator did not have a first case in the High Court and was not one of the returning visitors,” he said.
According to the state-run Tehran Times newspaper, another security guard was wounded on Saturday, the first day of the week on the Iranian calendar.
Iranian media say investigations are underway to identify and arrest other suspects who may have been involved in the attack.
In 1998, Razini was again tried to assassinate him while he was the head of Tehran’s judiciary.
