Utah prosecutors accused Tyler Robinson on Tuesday of aggravated murder in the deadly shooting of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“I do not make this decision lightly, and this is a decision that I made independently as a county prosecutor on the basis of the evidence and the circumstances available and the nature of the crime,” Gray said at a press conference.

Gray said that Robinson, 22, had been identified as a suspect in part because his family recognized him in released surveillance images after Kirk, a married father of two children, was killed last Wednesday at a crowded speech at the University of Utah Valley in Orem.

“Robinson’s mother expressed her concern to her husband that the suspicious shooter looked like Robinson,” said Robinson’s father, said Gray, reading accusation documents shared with CNBC Tuesday.

Robinson’s father called his son, who “suggested that he planned to commit suicide”, but agreed to meet his parents at their home, according to these documents.

“When he was asked why he did it, Robinson explained that there was too much trouble and (Kirk) spread too much hatred,” according to the documents.

A family friend, who is a retired sheriff, then met Robinson and his parents and convinced Robinson to go, according to the documents.

Robinson’s mother would also have told investigators: “During the last year, her son had become more political and had started to look more to the left, becoming more pro gays and oriented towards rights.”

She also told the police that at that time, Robinson “began to go out with her roommate, a biological man who made sex in transition,” according to documents.

The documents also detail a wide range of evidence which allegedly linked to Robinson to the Kirk shooting, including text messages between the suspect and his roommate and the DNA that would have been paired in Robinson.

Several of the messages contained romantic feelings, according to the documents.

The roommate told the police that, on the day of the shooting, Robinson sent a text: “Put what you do. Look under my keyboard, ”according to the documents.

The roommate looked and found a note indicating: “I had the opportunity to leave Charlie Kirk and I will take it.”

After reading the note, the roommate sent a text to Robinson, “what ?????????????

Robinson replied that: “To be honest, I hoped to keep this secret until my old age died. I’m sorry to get involved.”

The roommate asked: “You were not the one who did it correctly ????”

Robinson wrote: “I’m, I’m sorry.”

When the roommate asked why Robinson did, he replied: “I was enough of his hatred. A hatred cannot be negotiated.”

Robinson also sent a text to what he had planned the shooting for “a little over a week”, according to charge documents.

And he discussed dropping a firearm from the university after fled, sending a text to the roommate: “If I am able to grasp my invisible rifle, I would not have left any evidence.”

He added: “I want me to go back and grab it as soon as I got to my vehicle, I worry what my old man would do if I did not bring the grandfather rifle.”

Police found the alleged murder weapon, a gun in Boulon .30-06 with a mounted range, near the shooting location. There were several shell boxes with engraved inscriptions that seemed to refer to the memes internet.

Robinson declared in the texts with his roommate: “Remember how I climbed balls? The messages f —— are mainly a great meme”, according to the charging documents.

CNBC did not independently verify the content of the messages.

Gray was not sure if Robinson had kept a defense lawyer.

Kirk’s death seized the nation and generated very busy reactions.

Many Kirk political friends and political allies have felt intense sorrow, and politicians across the aisle have issued energetic condemnations of political violence.

But some, including President Donald Trump, vice-president JD Vance and deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, blamed the “radical left” for murder and reported plans to reprimand groups aligned with this ideology.

Others on the left who criticized Kirk’s right policy while he was alive, continued to do so after his murder, attracting the indignation of the activists’ supporters.
