Typhoon Ragasa is put in China after killing at least 17 in Taiwan

Typhon Ragasa, the most powerful tropical cyclone in the world this year, struck the Chinese city south of Yangjiang on Wednesday after killing 17 people in Taiwan and whipped Hong Kong with ferocious winds and heavy rains.

The typhoon followed Maoming, one of the largest cities for the oil refining in China, in the province of Guangdong.

In the east of the county of Hualien in Taiwan, 17 people remained missing after a barrier lake overflowed and sent a wall of water to a city, the fire service announced on Wednesday.

The subtropical taiwan, frequently struck by typhoons, normally have a well -oiled disaster mechanism which quickly diverts mass victims by quickly removing potential danger areas.

The video on social networks showed a powerful wave of storm generated by the Super Typhon Ragasa slamming Wednesday in the doors of a hotel in Hong Kong.

But many residents of Guangfu, an eastern city of Hualien, were in a hurry by tourists, said that there was an insufficient warning when a lake overflowed during Tuesday torrential rains provided by the Super Typhon Ragasa. Prime Minister Cho Jung-Tai called for an investigation into what did not work with evacuation orders.

The Chinese Marine Authority has issued its highest red wave warning for the first time this year, providing overvoltages of storms up to 2.8 meters in parts of Guangdong province, while Ragasa loads the denta of the Pearl river densely populated.

Ragasa trained on the Western Pacific last week. Fucked by hot seas and favorable atmospheric conditions, the tropical cyclone quickly intensified to become a super typhoon in category 5 Monday, with winds exceeding 260 kilometers per hour.

At least 10 deaths were reported in the Philippines, including seven fishermen who drowned after their boat was beaten by huge waves and a fierce wind, and turned on Monday off the city of Santa Ana, in the north of the province of Cagayan. Five other fishermen remained missing, provincial officials said.

The Super Typhon Ragasa brought heavy rains on Monday and launched landslides in the north of the Philippines while it touched ground with sustained winds measuring 215 km / h and gusts of up to 295 km / h. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan and Dongguan, the largest cities on the storm path, are home to around 50 million people.

The Ministry of Emergency Management sent tens of thousands of tents, folding beds, emergency lighting and other rescue supplies to Guangdong province on Tuesday, Chinese state media reported, while more than 770,000 people were evacuated.

Certain stores and restaurants in the province have parked large trucks rented in front of their windows in order to protect them from the storm, local media reported.

A crowd flowing the storm under the Shenzhen bridge was moved by the traffic police.

“The typhoon was really intense, but I did not go out for a long time,” said an electric scooter delivery driver called Tim and used his vehicle to assess the damage.

“It’s very fun, but it’s also dangerous. I wanted to ride around the seafront, but it’s too dangerous, so I had to come back to the bridge.”

The Chinese Marine Authority has warned of a high risk of flooding in Shenzhen, especially in the low zones, with a storm overvoltage alert which should remain in force until Thursday.

A five -year -old woman and son were swept away in the ocean on Tuesday after looking at the typhoon from the seafront of Hong Kong, according to South China Morning Post, who said they were now in intensive care.

The Hong Kong hospital authority said that at least 50 people had been injured by the typhoon, while the government had opened 50 temporary shelters, in which 791 was looking for refuge.

In the Macao game center next to Hong Kong, the casinos were forced to close their play areas. The guests were unable to leave their property. A user of the Chinese Xiaohongshu application has shown videos of sealed doors in a casino station for protection against wind and debris.
