Waymo has become the first operator of autonomous vehicles to obtain a license to test autonomous cars in the streets of New York, said the State Ministry of Transport by announcing the news.

The New York motor vehicle department has approved Waymo’s request, allowing the company to carry out limited tests of its autonomous vehicles in certain areas of the city.

The permit comes after years of regulatory negotiations and reports a potential change towards a wider deployment of driver -free cars in applications such as carpooling services and delivery services in the city’s complex traffic environment.

Waymo says it has finished more than 10 million trips in 1,500 cars spread in the United States, and the company has made its high-level autonomous car debut in San Francisco, Phoenix and Austin.

This decision marks an important step for industry in the most densely populated urban environment in the United States and is a new salvo in the battle for the domination of the market for cars without national driver.

So what can Waymo do in New York?

As part of its test program in New York, the city mayor’s office said Waymo would be authorized to test eight cars in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and must regularly check with the Data Transport and Security Ministry.

“We are a technological administration and we are still looking for innovative means to advance our city safely,” said Mayor Eric Adams in a press release. “New York is proud to welcome Waymo to test this new technology in Manhattan and Brooklyn, because we know that this test is only the first step to move our city further in the 21st century.”

Waymo is required to have a specialized driver trained in cars at any time.

Why is the NYC de Waymo license important?

Waymo’s license is a historical development for a sector that has faced skepticism on the part of people who live and work where autonomous technology has been tested.

With the support of five major American cities where he tests his cars, the NYC de Waymo plan could help accelerate the pace of adoption in urban centers in the United States, if it can show that it is safe and easy to use.

With security protocols and regulatory managers who continue to evolve nationally, a launching and transparent test period would greatly convince the horsemen and local regulators that driverless technology is sure, reports MSNBC.

This decision is part of a broader trend in American cities and states gradually opening their roads to autonomous vehicles, balancing security problems with the potential advantages of reduced circulation congestion and improving mobility options.
