WBO Rejects Joey Spencer, Fundora Seeks New Opponent

The WBO has refused to accept Joey Spencer’s offer to challenge WBC/WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora for his next fight in March.

Spencer was rejected

It is no surprise that Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs) is not approved by the World Boxing Organization as an opponent for Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) because he was not ranked in the top 15 by any of the four Organizations that have sanctions at 154. This leaves Fundora management needs to choose one of the WBO contenders.

Choices

1. Xander Zayas
2. Charles Conwell
3. Josh Kelly
4. Jorge Garcia Perez

Fundora has not fought since defeating WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu on March 30, 2024. It would not be good for ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora to take on Zayas or Conwell, who is on a one-year retirement.

A good choice would be Josh Kelly. He is a light boxer and a very handsome fighter—more of a British fighter than a true competitor. He would be an easy task for the 6’6″ Fundora to control, beat and enjoy the whip on him.

I can’t believe Kelly is in the top 10. How is this guy in the top 3? He’s over 50, but he could be perfect for Fundora right now.

Fundora, 27, was in talks to defend Errol Spence in March, but the World Boxing Organization refused to sanction the fight this week. Their opinion was that Spence was coming from 1.5 years ago, losing to Terence Crawford, not ranked in the WBO top 15, and had never fought in a weight class. Those were very good reasons.

Fundora stood up

Fundora needs to fight soon because he has been out of the ring for so long, and it is ruining his career. Well, he’s young enough that such a job won’t hurt him like it would a great warrior, but his reputation is suffering. He failed to capitalize on his victory over Tszyu by returning to the ring soon after.

“They tell me that the WBO refused to approve Joey Spencer if he will compete with the Super Welterweight champion, Sebastián Fundora, next March. This week, the negotiations to see Fundora against Errol Spence broke down. #espnknockout,” said Salvador Rodriguez X.
